Second-harmonic generation in the solid state is restricted to materials that crystallize in non-centrosymmetric space groups. Unfortunately, the vast majority of solids crystallize in centrosymmetric space groups and are therefore SHG-inactive. The requirement for solid-state asymmetry is addressed in a new series of organic salts. The acid p-nitrophenylglycine, SHG-inactive due to its centrosymmetric (P1) packing, was coupled to six optically pure amines to form salts and (or) complexes that, by virtue of their chiral counterion, crystallized in non-centrosymmetric space groups. The 1064 nm output from a Nd:YAG laser produced 532 nm second-harmonic generation from each of the six salts, with three of the salts producing second-harmonic intensities at least an order of magnitude greater than that of our standard, urea. X-ray crystallographic analysis was carried out on five of the six salts, and an attempt was made to rationalize the second-harmonic intensity of each of these five salts based on the orientation of its molecular charge-transfer axis in the unit cell and on its chromophore density. Resume : La generation de secondes harmoniques dans l'etat solide est possible seulement pour les materiaux qui cristallisent dans des groupes spatiaux non-centrosymetriques. Malheureusement, la grande majorite des solides cristallisent dans un des groupes spatiaux centrosymetriques et sont, par consequent, inactifs en ce qui concerne la generation de secondes harmoniques. Cette condition sur l'asymetrie cristalline est adresse dans une nouvelle serie de sels organiques. L'acide p-nitrophenylglycinique, inactive pour la generation de secondes harmoniques du a sa cristallisation centrosymetrique ( P1), fut combinee avec six amines optiquement actives pour former des sels et (ou) des complexes qui, du a leurs contre-ions chiraux, cristallisent dans un des groupes spatiaux non-centrosymetriques. Soumis a un rayonnement lumineux de 1064 nm produit par un laser Nd:YAG (grenat d'yttrium et d'aluminium), chacun des six sels a genere une seconde harmonique de 532 nm. Trois de ces sels ont produit des secondes harmoniques ayant des intensites d'au moins une ordre de grandeur superieures a celle produite par notre etalon, l'uree. Cinq des six sels ont ete soumis a une analyse cristallographique aux rayons X. Une tentative fut effectuee pour modeliser l'intensite de la seconde harmonique produite par chacun des cinq sels en se basant sur l'orientation de l'axe de transfert de charge dans la maille elementaire, et sur la densite chromophorique de chacun d'entre eux. A supramolecular cocrystal of 2-ammino-5-nitropyridine (ANP) with 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) has been successfully grown by the slow evaporation solution growth technique. The crystal structure of 2-amino-5-nitropyridine-2,4-dinitrophenol (ANDP) was elucidated by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, and it belongs to a monoclinic system with centrosymmetric space group P21/n. The bulk phase purity and homogeneity of the material were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The functional groups present in the molecule are identified by FT-IR analysis, and the band gap energy was estimated using diffuse reflectance data by the application of the Kubelka–Munk algorithm. The thermal stability of the compound was investigated by carrying out TG–DTA analysis. Theoretical calculations were performed using the density functional theory method to derive the dipole moment and hyperpolarizability. The high value of first-order molecular hyperpolarizability (β) suggests that it is a potential microlevel NLO candidate.
