Opposing Effects of Retinoic Acid on Cell Growth Result from Alternate Activation of Two Different Nuclear Receptors

TLDR
It is shown that, in addition to functioning through RAR, RA activates the "orphan" nuclear receptor PPARbeta/delta, which, in turn, induces the expression of prosurvival genes and opposing effects of RA on cell growth emanate from alternate activation of two different nuclear receptors.

Vitamin effects on the immune system: vitamins A and D take centre stage

TL;DR: The current understanding of the essential roles of vitamins in modulating a broad range of immune processes, such as lymphocyte activation and proliferation, T-helper-cell differentiation, tissue-specific lymphocyte homing, and the production of specific antibody isotypes and regulation of the immune response are presented.

Fatty acid-binding proteins: role in metabolic diseases and potential as drug targets.

TL;DR: The central role of lipid chaperones — the fatty acid-binding proteins (FABPs) — in lipid-mediated biological processes and systemic metabolic homeostasis through the regulation of diverse lipid signals is discussed, and their therapeutic significance is highlighted.

Retinoic Acid Synthesis and Signaling during Early Organogenesis

TL;DR: Recent studies suggest that retinoic acid may act primarily in a paracrine manner and provide insight into the cell-cell signaling networks that control differentiation of pluripotent cells.

Nutrient sensing and inflammation in metabolic diseases.

TL;DR: This Review provides an overview of several important networks that sense and manage nutrients and discusses how they integrate with immune and inflammatory pathways to influence the physiological and pathological metabolic states in the body.

Differential expression and activation of a family of murine peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors.

TL;DR: The data suggest that tissue-specific responsiveness to peroxisome proliferators, including certain fatty acids, is in part a consequence of differential expression of multiple, pharmacologically distinct PPAR isoforms.

The induction of differentiation in teratocarcinoma stem cells by retinoic acid

TL;DR: Using one embryonal carcinoma cell line, F9, it is found that retinoic acid at concentrations as low as 10(-9) M induces multiple phenotypic changes in the cultures in vitro, which are consistent with the proposition that retinosic acid induces differentiation of embryonal cancer cells into endoderm.

9-cis retinoic acid stereoisomer binds and activates the nuclear receptor RXR alpha.

TL;DR: The identification of a stereoisomer of retinoic acid, 9-cis retinol, which directly binds and activates RXRα, which suggests a new role for isomerization in the physiology of natural retinoids.
