Experimental validation of the effectiveness of these natural compounds to prevent or reduce the cytokine storm might be beneficial as an adjunct treatment of SARS-CoV-2.Abstract:
In 2020, a novel strain of coronavirus (COVID-19) has led to a significant morbidity and mortality worldwide As of the date of this writing, a total of 116 M cases has been diagnosed worldwide leading to 25 M deaths The number of mortalities is directly correlated with the rise of innate immune cells (especially macrophages) in the lungs that secrete inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) leading to the development of "Cytokine Storm Syndrome" (CSS), multi-organ-failure and death Given that currently the treatment of this condition is rare and release of effective vaccine might be months away, here, we review the plants and their pharmacologically active-compounds as potential phytopharmaceuticals for the virus induced inflammatory response Experimental validation of the effectiveness of these natural compounds to prevent or reduce the cytokine storm might be beneficial as an adjunct treatment of SARS-CoV-2read more

The Hidden Mechanism beyond Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) Potent in vivo and in vitro Anti-Inflammatory Activity
Shahira M. Ezzat,Marwa I. Ezzat,Mona M. Okba,Esther T. Menze,Ashraf B. Abdel-Naim,Shahnas O. Mohamed +5 more
TL;DR: Ginger anti-inflammatory activity is mediated by inhibiting macrophage and neutrophils activation as well as negatively affecting monocyte and leukocyte migration, evidenced by the dose-dependent decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and replenishment the total antioxidant capacity.

Can Panax ginseng help control cytokine storm in COVID-19?
TL;DR: Panax ginseng, a medicinal plant widely used for treating various conditions, might be appropriate for this need due to its anti-inflammatory/cytokine/viral activities, fewer side effects, and cost efficiency as mentioned in this paper .

The Efficacy of Traditional Medicinal Plants in Modulating the Main Protease of SARS‐CoV‐2 and Cytokine Storm
TL;DR: Among these phytochemicals, glycyrrhizin, withaferin A, curcumin, nigellidine and cordifolioside A suppressed SARS‐CoV‐2 replication and showed stronger anti‐inflammatory activities than standard Covid‐19 drugs.

Detectable serum SARS-CoV-2 viral load (RNAaemia) is closely associated with drastically elevated interleukin 6 (IL-6) level in critically ill COVID-19 patients
Xiaohua Chen,Binghong Zhao,Yueming Qu,Yueming Qu,Yurou Chen,Jie Xiong,Yong Feng,Dong Men,Qianchuan Huang,Ying Liu,Bo Yang,Jinya Ding,Feng Li +12 more
TL;DR: Serum SARS-CoV-2 viral load (RNAaemia) is strongly associated with cytokine storm and can be used to predict the poor prognosis of COVID-19 patients and strongly suggest that cytokine IL-6 should be considered as a therapeutic target in critically ill patients with excessive inflammatory response.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 directly neutralizes human spleens and LNs through infecting tissue- resident CD169+ macrophage, and triggers macrophages to produce IL-6, a proinflammatory cytokine that directly promotes lymphocyte necrosis.
