Reinterpreting the Empathy-Altruism Relationship: When One Into One Equals Oneness

TLDR
It is suggested that the conditions that lead to empathic concern also lead to a greater sense of self-other overlap, raising the possibility that helping under these conditions is not selfless but is also directed toward the self.
Abstract
Important features of the self-concept can be located outside of the individual and inside close or related others. The authors use this insight to reinterpret data previously said to support the empathy-altruism model of helping, which asserts that empathic concern for another results in selflessness and true altruism. That is, they argue that the conditions that lead to empathic concern also lead to a greater sense of self-other overlap, raising the possibility that helping under these conditions is not selfless but is also directed toward the self. In 3 studies, the impact of empathic concern on willingness to help was eliminated when oneness--a measure of perceived self-other overlap--was considered. Path analyses revealed further that empathic concern increased helping only through its relation to perceived oneness, thereby throwing the empathy-altruism model into question. The authors suggest that empathic concern affects helping primarily as an emotional signal of oneness.

When to Use Your Head and When to Use Your Heart The Differential Value of Perspective-Taking Versus Empathy in Competitive Interactions

Your heart makes my heart move: Cues of social connectedness cause shared emotions and physiological states among strangers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tested the hypothesis that cues of social connectedness could lead even new interaction partners to experience shared emotional and physiological states, and found that socially connected participants had greater cardiovascular reactivity (heart rate and blood pressure) than controls.

Mindfulness increases prosocial responses toward ostracized strangers through empathic concern.

TL;DR: In this paper, four studies tested the proposition that mindfulness and its training fostered prosociality toward ostracized strangers and found that dispositional mindfulness predicted greater empathic concern for, and more helping behavior toward, an ostraced stranger.

Persuade him by email, but see her in person: Online persuasion revisited

TL;DR: Email may be an effective route for men to use for interacting with one another if they share no mutual identity, and cognitive responses indicated that men engaged in a more rational evaluation of the persuasive message in the email condition, even when the communicator and recipient did not share an identity.
