Journal ArticleDOI
Frequency of abdominal wall hernias: is classical teaching out of date?
TL;DR: The epidemiology of hernia repair (retrospective review) over 30 years is investigated to determine whether the relative frequencies of hernias are evolving and contrasts with hernia incidence figures quoted in common reference books.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Pancreas
TL;DR: Although tumor origin and molecular pathogenesis remain poorly understood, recently established grading and staging systems facilitate patient risk stratification, and thereby directly impact clinical decision making, surgery remains the only curative treatment for early-stage disease.
Journal Article
Pancreatic cancer: diagnosis and management.
Robert Freelove,Anne D. Walling +1 more
TL;DR: Patients with pancreatic cancer present with obstructive jaundice caused by compression of the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, which is a leading cause of cancer deaths in this country.
Journal ArticleDOI
Treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dacarbazine: recommendation from a 22-year follow-up of 18 patients.
Hui Huang,Jame Abraham,Elizabeth Hung,Steven D. Averbuch,Maria J. Merino,Seth M. Steinberg,Karel Pacak,Tito Fojo +7 more
TL;DR: A long‐term follow‐up was conducted of 18 patients with a diagnosis of pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma treated with a combination of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dacarbazine (CVD).
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammatory mechanisms contributing to pancreatic cancer development.
TL;DR: The results demonstrate that similar inflammatory components and downstream effectors are present in CP and pancreatic cancers, and suggest that a common pathway for pancreatic cancer development may be through a chronic inflammatory process including stroma formation.

Journal ArticleDOI
Polyp on ultrasound: now what? The association between gallbladder polyps and cancer.
TL;DR: Polyps less than 2 cm were not associated with high-grade dysplasia or cancer and thus surgery may not be required, and the group of patients with noncancerous polyps was significantly younger than the cancer group (polyps and no polyps).
Journal ArticleDOI
Complex Ventral Hernias: A Review of Past to Present.
Charles N. Trujillo,Aaron Fowler,Mohammed H. Al-Temimi,Aamna Ali,Samir Johna,Deron J. Tessier +5 more
TL;DR: This review article highlights the literature regarding complex ventral hernias, including a shift from a focus that stressed surgical technique toward a multimodal approach, which involves optimization and identification of suboptimal characteristics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diverticular abscess presenting as an incarcerated inguinal hernia.
Josh Greenberg,Tracey D. Arnell +1 more
TL;DR: A case of a diverticular abscess presenting as a left inguinal hernia, analogous to an Amyand's hernia in which an inflamed appendix is found in a right inguINAL hernia is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI
Damage control resuscitation: permissive hypotension and massive transfusion protocols.
TL;DR: Evidence for hemostatic resuscitation in adult trauma management is more comprehensive, and there are limited data to support its use in pediatric trauma patients with severe hemorrhage, but additional studies on the management of children with severe uncontrolled hemorrhage are needed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intra-operative decision making by ophthalmic surgeons.
TL;DR: Ophthalmic surgeons’ risk assessment, risk tolerance and decision strategies appear to be influenced by personality.
