Frequency of abdominal wall hernias: is classical teaching out of date?

TL;DR: The epidemiology of hernia repair (retrospective review) over 30 years is investigated to determine whether the relative frequencies of hernias are evolving and contrasts with hernia incidence figures quoted in common reference books.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Pancreas

TL;DR: Although tumor origin and molecular pathogenesis remain poorly understood, recently established grading and staging systems facilitate patient risk stratification, and thereby directly impact clinical decision making, surgery remains the only curative treatment for early-stage disease.

Pancreatic cancer: diagnosis and management.

TL;DR: Patients with pancreatic cancer present with obstructive jaundice caused by compression of the bile duct in the head of the pancreas, which is a leading cause of cancer deaths in this country.
Journal ArticleDOI

Treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma with cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dacarbazine: recommendation from a 22-year follow-up of 18 patients.

TL;DR: A long‐term follow‐up was conducted of 18 patients with a diagnosis of pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma treated with a combination of cyclophosphamide, vincristine, and dacarbazine (CVD).
Journal ArticleDOI

Inflammatory mechanisms contributing to pancreatic cancer development.

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that similar inflammatory components and downstream effectors are present in CP and pancreatic cancers, and suggest that a common pathway for pancreatic cancer development may be through a chronic inflammatory process including stroma formation.

Can ruptured appendicitis be detected preoperatively in the ED

TL;DR: Besides some clinical findings, CT scan can accurately determine appendiceal rupture in acute appendicitis and can further demonstrate the presence of local inflammatory mass, facilitating management decision in the emergency department (ED).
Journal ArticleDOI

Learning Curve for a Laparoscopic Appendectomy by a Surgical Trainee

TL;DR: A laparoscopic appendectomy performed by a surgical trainee is safe, compared with an open appendectomy, and the learning curve associated with a laparoscope appendectomy was thirty cases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Potential of human umbilical cord matrix and rabbit bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in repair of surgically incised rabbit external anal sphincter.

TL;DR: Stem cell injection at the site of injury can enhance contractile function of the anal sphincter without surgical repair and Transplantation of stem cells, particularly bone marrow mesenchymal cells, may provide an effective tool for treating anal spHincter injuries in humans.
Journal ArticleDOI

Correlation of expression of BP1, a homeobox gene, with estrogen receptor status in breast cancer

TL;DR: Because BP1 is expressed abnormally in breast tumors, it could provide a useful target for therapy, particularly in patients with ER-negative tumors, and the frequent expression of BP1 in all tumor grades suggests that activation ofBP1 is an early event.
Journal ArticleDOI

Parathyroid Imaging: The Importance of Dual-Radiopharmaceutical Simultaneous Acquisition with 99mTc-Sestamibi and 123I

TL;DR: A dual-tracer, single-phase parathyroid imaging protocol consisting of simultaneous acquisition of 99mTc-sestamibi and 123I images with pinhole collimation at 15 min and perfectly coregistered subtraction results in a higher degree of accuracy and a greater degree of diagnostic certainty than the commonly used single-tracers, dual-phase protocol.
