Together these agents appear to determine the complex physiologic responses to a variety of stressors.
Abstract
Stress stimulates several adaptive hormonal responses. Prominent among these responses are the secretion of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla, corticosteroids from the adrenal cortex, and adrenocorticotropin from the anterior pituitary. A number of complex interactions are involved in the regulation of these hormones. Glucocorticoids regulate catecholamine biosynthesis in the adrenal medulla and catecholamines stimulate adrenocorticotropin release from the anterior pituitary. In addition, other hormones, including corticotropin-releasing factor, vasoactive intestinal peptide, and arginine vasopressin stimulate while the corticosteroids and somatostatin inhibit adrenocorticotropin secretion. Together these agents appear to determine the complex physiologic responses to a variety of stressors.

Sex-dependent effects of restraint on nociception and pituitary-adrenal hormones in the rat

TL;DR: The sex-dependent effects of acute restraint (RT) on nociceptive and pituitary-adrenal responses were investigated in the rat and the role played by corticosteroids in the nocICEptive responses of the two sexes is discussed.

Adaptation of plasma catecholamine and corticosterone responses to short-term repeated noise stress in rats

TL;DR: It was demonstrated that the first exposure to noise induced a specific temporal pattern of neuroendocrine changes: Plasma A and NA contents increased rapidly and peaked early after stimulus onset but their peak-latencies were different (1 and 5 min, respectively).

Interannual variability of Black-legged Kittiwake productivity is reflected in baseline plasma corticosterone

TL;DR: During a 5-year period of declining Kittiwake productivity in Chiniak Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska, there was increasing baseline corticosterone levels during both incubation and chick-rearing, consistent with warming ocean temperatures and decreased availability of forage fishes to apex predators.

Rat dopamine beta-hydroxylase: molecular cloning and characterization of the cDNA and regulation of the mRNA by reserpine.

TL;DR: A number of cDNA clones for rat dopamine β‐hydroxylase (DBH) were isolated from a rat pheochromocytoma tumor cDNA library and it was indicated that this N‐terminal region contained the only extensive hydrophobic domain and thus constituted the only obvious potential membrane attachment site.

Conditioned fear-induced tachycardia in the rat; vagal involvement

TL;DR: The results indicate that the autonomic nervous system is differentially involved in heart rate regulation in conditioned fear rats and in non-shocked controls: inNon-shocking controls a predominant sympathetic nervous system activation results in an increase inheart rate, whereas in conditionedFear rats the tachycardiac response is attenuated by a simultaneous activation of sympathetic nervousSystem and parasympathetic nervous system.

Characterization of a 41-residue ovine hypothalamic peptide that stimulates secretion of corticotropin and beta-endorphin

TL;DR: A peptide with high potency and intrinsic activity for stimulating the secretion of corticotropin-like and β-endorphinlike immunoactivities by cultured anterior pituitary cells has been purified in this paper.

A Syndrome produced by Diverse Nocuous Agents

Hans Selye
- 01 Jul 1936 -
TL;DR: If the organism is severely damaged by acute non-specific nocuous agents such as exposure to cold, surgical injury, production of spinal shock, excessive muscular exercise, or intoxications with sublethal doses of diverse drugs, a typical syndrome appears, the symptoms of which are independent of the nature of the damaging agent or the pharmacological type of the drug employed.

Simultaneous single isotope radioenzymatic assay of plasma norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine.

TL;DR: Modification of the original single isotope radioenzymatic assay of Passon and Peuler permits the direct and simultaneous analysis of norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine in plasma samples of 50 μl or less.
