The complex interplay of cardiovascular system and cognition: how to predict dementia in the elderly?

TL;DR: More research is needed in this area, specifically, placebo-controlled randomized trials in both mid-life and late-life with cognitive dysfunction as a primary endpoint and control of cardiovascular risk factors linked to beneficial effects in terms of cognition.
Book ChapterDOI

Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress as a Primary Pathogenic Mechanism Leading to Age-Related Macular Degeneration

TL;DR: It is proposed that misfolded-protein-induced ER stress in the retinal-pigmented epithelium and/or choroid could lead to chronic oxidative stress, complement deregulation and AMD, and small molecules targeted to ER stress and oxidative stress could allow for a shift from disease treatment to disease prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of the TNF and IL-1 systems in human brain and blood after ischemic stroke

TL;DR: The results suggest that TNF and IL-1 are expressed by subsets of cells and that TNFR2 is expressed in areas with increased astrocytic reactivity and the hypothesis that targeting post-stroke inflammation could be a promising add-on therapy in ischemic stroke patients is supported.

“Mini-mental state”: A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

A practical method for grading the cognitive state of patients for the clinician

TL;DR: The Mini-Mental State (MMS) as mentioned in this paper is a simplified version of the standard WAIS with eleven questions and requires only 5-10 min to administer, and is therefore practical to use serially and routinely.
Journal ArticleDOI

Clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease : report of the NINCDS-ADRDA Work Group under the auspices of Department of Health and Human Services Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease

TL;DR: The criteria proposed are intended to serve as a guide for the diagnosis of probable, possible, and definite Alzheimer's disease; these criteria will be revised as more definitive information becomes available.
Journal ArticleDOI

Atherosclerosis — An Inflammatory Disease

TL;DR: Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease as discussed by the authors, and it is a major cause of death in the United States, Europe, and much of Asia, despite changes in lifestyle and use of new pharmacologic approaches to lower plasma cholesterol concentrations.
