TLDR
The results show important differences in the specificities of these three galectins toward poly-N-acetyllactosamine epitopes found on the surface of cells.Abstract:
The carbohydrate binding specificities of the galectin family of animal lectins has been the source of intense recent investigations. Isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC) provides direct determination of the thermodynamics of binding of carbohydrates to lectins, and has provided important insights into the fine carbohydrate binding specificities of a wide number of plant and animal lectins. Recent ITC studies have been performed with galectin-1, galectin-3 and galectin-7 and their interactions with sialylated and non-sialylated carbohydrates. The results show important differences in the specificities of these three galectins toward poly-N-acetyllactosamine epitopes found on the surface of cells. Published in 2004.read more

An Automated Approach to Assess Relative Galectin-Glycan Affinity Following Glycan Microarray Analysis
A. Ho,Shang-Chuen Wu,Nourine A. Kamili,Anna V. Blenda,Richard D. Cummings,Sean R. Stowell,Connie M. Arthur +6 more
TL;DR: A method to directly optimize the efficiency of assessing association constants following multi-GBP concentration glycan array analysis is developed and programs that automatically analyze raw array data to generate output graphics following array analysis at multiple doses are developed.

Evaluation of galectin binding by surface plasmon resonance.
TL;DR: This chapter describes the affinity measurement of Galectins-1, -2, and -3 and their glycoside ligands using this approach and describes the kinetics and affinities characteristic of many biological interactions.
Galectin-1 in injury and regeneration
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that axotomized neurons that were able to regenerate or initiate a growth response also had increased G a l l expression, which underscores an important contribution of endogenous Gal l to the regenerative process and to sensory neuronal development and/or maintenance.
Determination of the binding mode of carbohydrates bound to galectin-1 : combination of data from saturation transfer difference NMR and molecular modeling procedures
TL;DR: In this article, the binding mode of various carbohydrates in complex with Galectin-1 has been determined by experimental data from NMR and modeling data from docking and molecular dynamics procedures, and the binding modes of different Kohlenhydrates have been determined.

A model for p53-induced apoptosis
Kornelia Polyak,Kornelia Polyak,Yong Xia,Jay L. Zweier,Kenneth W. Kinzler,Bert Vogelstein,Bert Vogelstein +6 more
TL;DR: Examination of transcripts induced by p53 expression before the onset of apoptosis stimulated additional biochemical and pharmacological experiments suggesting that p53 results in apoptosis through a three-step process: the transcriptional induction of redox-related genes; the formation of reactive oxygen species; and the oxidative degradation of mitochondrial components, culminating in cell death.

Galectins: A Family of Animal Lectins That Decipher Glycocodes
Ken-ichi Kasai,Jun Hirabayashi +1 more
TL;DR: Crystallographic studies revealed that galectins and legume lectins such as concanavalin A have a common topology in spite of the absence of sequence homology, which suggests a possible relationship between animal and plant lectins, and the existence of a lectin super family.

Restricted Receptor Segregation into Membrane Microdomains Occurs on Human T Cells During Apoptosis Induced by Galectin-1
TL;DR: It is determined that galectin-1 binds to a restricted set of T cell surface glycoproteins, and that only CD45, CD43, and CD7 appear to directly participate in galectIn-1-induced apoptosis.
