Twenty years of particle image velocimetry

The development of the method of particle image velocimetry (PIV) is traced by describing some of the milestones that have enabled new and/or better measurements to be made. The current status of PIV is summarized, and some goals for future advances are addressed.read more

Dynamics of Flow Structures and Transport Phenomena, 2. Relationship with Design Objectives and Design Optimization
TL;DR: There have been several approaches in the literature to identify and characterize flow structures qualitatively as well as quantitatively as discussed by the authors, and a stepwise procedure is suggested for the design of equipment using flow structure knowledge, where an attempt has been made to relate the structure properties (such as age, penetration depth, size, shape, and energy content distribution) to the design parameters, such as mixing time, heat and mass-transfer coefficient, drag coefficient, dissipation rate, etc.).

Laser Doppler field sensor for high resolution flow velocity imaging without camera
TL;DR: A laser sensor for highly spatially resolved flow imaging without using a camera is presented, an extension of the principle of laser Doppler anemometry (LDA), instead of a parallel fringe system, diverging and converging fringes are employed, which leads to an increased spatial and velocity resolution compared to conventional LDA.

Design and Experimental Evaluation of an Odor Sensing Method for a Pocket-Sized Quadcopter.
TL;DR: The design and verification of an intake system using the wake of a pocket-sized quadcopter for the chemical plume tracing (CPT) problem imply that, although a further development of three-dimensional CPT is necessary in order to conduct it in unknown and cluttered environments, the intake method proposed in this paper enables a Pocket-sized Quadcopter to perform three- dimensional CPT.

Experimental determination of the shear rate in a stirred tank with a non-newtonian fluid: Carbopol
Jean-Christophe Gabelle,Jérôme Morchain,Jérôme Morchain,Dominique Anne-Archard,Frederic Augier,Alain Liné,Alain Liné +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the local shear rate generated in a cylindrical tank equipped with a Rushton turbine was investigated using particle image velocimetry in a shear-thinning fluid (Carbopol), which was used in an attempt to mimic fermentation broths.

TL;DR: The power of BioFlow is illustrated in the context of amoeboid cell migration, by modelling the intracellular actin bulk flow of the parasite Entamoeba histolytica using fluid dynamics, and report unique experimental measures that complement and extend both theoretical estimations and invasive experimental measures.

Particle Image Velocimetry: A Practical Guide
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a practical guide for the planning, performance and understanding of experiments employing the PIV technique, which is primarily intended for engineers, scientists and students, who already have some basic knowledge of fluid mechanics and nonintrusive optical measurement techniques.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry
Christian Willert,Morteza Gharib +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the directional ambiguity associated with PIV and LSV is resolved by implementing local spatial cross-correlations between two sequential single-exposed particle images, and the recovered velocity data are used to compute the spatial and temporal vorticity distribution and the circulation of the vortex ring.

Particle Image Velocimetry
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors use hot-wire (HW) or laser velocimetry (LV) to estimate the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields of wake flows.

Determination of displacements using an improved digital correlation method
TL;DR: An improved digital correlation method is presented for obtaining the full-field in-plane deformations of an object by numerically correlating a selected subset from the digitized intensity pattern of the undeformed object.

Fundamentals of digital particle image velocimetry
TL;DR: In this paper, the measurement principle of digital particle image velocimetry (PIV) is described in terms of linear system theory and conditions for PIV correlation analysis as a valid interrogation method are determined.
