Twenty years of particle image velocimetry

TLDR
The development of the method of particle image velocimetry (PIV) is traced by describing some of the milestones that have enabled new and/or better measurements to be made.
Abstract
The development of the method of particle image velocimetry (PIV) is traced by describing some of the milestones that have enabled new and/or better measurements to be made. The current status of PIV is summarized, and some goals for future advances are addressed.

Two-dimensional digital image correlation for in-plane displacement and strain measurement: a review

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the 2D digital image correlation (2D DIC) technique for displacement field measurement and strain field estimation is presented, and detailed analyses of the measurement accuracy considering the influences of both experimental conditions and algorithm details are provided.

Theory of cross-correlation analysis of PIV images : Image analysis as measuring technique in flows

R. D. Keane, +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, cross-correlation methods of interrogation of successive single-exposure frames can be used to measure the separation of pairs of particle images between successive frames, which can be optimized in terms of spatial resolution, detection rate, accuracy and reliability.

Collective migration of an epithelial monolayer in response to a model wound

TL;DR: Dealing with Madin–Darby canine kidney cells on various surfaces, it is found that a sudden release of the available surface is sufficient to trigger collective motility, which is characterized by a duality between collective and individual behaviors.

Review of flow rate estimates of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

TL;DR: By quantifying the amount of oil at different locations (wellhead, ocean surface, and atmosphere), it is concluded that just over 2 million barrels of oil (after accounting for containment) and all of the released methane remained in the deep sea.

Particle tracking velocimetry in three-dimensional flows

TL;DR: Hardware components for 3D PTV systems will be discussed, and a strict mathematical model of photogrammetric 3D coordinate determination, taking into account the different refractive indices in the optical path, will be presented.

Distortion Compensation for Generalized Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: In this paper, a general experimental calibration procedure is described which determines the magnification matrix of a distorted imaging system, and an algorithm is presented to compute accurate velocity field displacements from measurements of distorted PIV images.

Digital Particle Image Velocimetry

TL;DR: The first non-invasive point velocity measurement technique was Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), which used a crossed pair of laser beams to measure the velocity of seed particles entrained in the flow as discussed by the authors.

An Automated Technique for Obtaining Cloud Motion from Geosynchronous Satellite Data Using Cross Correlation

TL;DR: Comparisons of 300 vectors with those obtained from a manual operational procedure showed similar results for direction but indicated that the automated procedure was better a...

Scattering particle characteristics and their effect on pulsed laser measurements of fluid flow: Speckle velocimetry vs particle image velocimetry

TL;DR: The source density for a fluid volume illuminated by a laser sheet of thickness Δz is defined to be the number density of particles per unit volume and their size can vary over a very wide range of values, depending upon the fluid and its treatment.
