Journal ArticleDOI
Prophage exotoxins enhance colonization fitness in epidemic scarlet fever-causing Streptococcus pyogenes.
Stephan Brouwer,Timothy C. Barnett,Diane Ly,Diane Ly,Katherine J. Kasper,David M. P. De Oliveira,Tania Rivera-Hernandez,Amanda J. Cork,Liam McIntyre,Magnus G. Jespersen,Johanna Richter,Benjamin L. Schulz,Gordon Dougan,Gordon Dougan,Victor Nizet,Kwok Yung Yuen,Kwok Yung Yuen,Yuanhai You,John K. McCormick,Martina L. Sanderson-Smith,Martina L. Sanderson-Smith,Mark R. Davies,Mark R. Davies,Mark J. Walker +23 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that streptolysin O (SLO)-induced glutathione efflux from host cellular stores is a previously unappreciated GAS virulence mechanism that promotes SSA release and activity, representing the first description of a thiol-activated bacterial superantigen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neisseria meningitidis Lacking the Major Porins PorA and PorB Is Viable and Modulates Apoptosis and the Oxidative Burst of Neutrophils.
Ian R. Peak,Adrienne Chen,Freda E.-C. Jen,Courtney Jennings,Benjamin L. Schulz,Nigel J. Saunders,Arshad Khan,H. Steven Seifert,Michael P. Jennings +8 more
TL;DR: These porin mutants are not impaired in their capacity to inhibit both staurosporine-induced apoptosis and a phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate-induced oxidative burst in human neutrophils suggesting that the porins are not the only bacterial factors that can modulate these processes in host cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
HerMES: A DEFICIT IN THE SURFACE BRIGHTNESS OF THE COSMIC INFRARED BACKGROUND DUE TO GALAXY CLUSTER GRAVITATIONAL LENSING
Michael Zemcov,Michael Zemcov,Andrew Blain,Asantha Cooray,Asantha Cooray,Matthieu Béthermin,Matthieu Béthermin,J. J. Bock,J. J. Bock,David L. Clements,A. Conley,L. Conversi,C. D. Dowell,C. D. Oliver,Johan Richard,Johan Richard,Isaac Roseboom,Isaac Roseboom,Benjamin L. Schulz,Douglas Scott,David L. Shupe,Anthony J. Smith,Ivan Valtchanov,Marco P. Viero,Lian-Tao Wang,Julie Wardlow +37 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the surface brightness of four massive galaxy clusters with the SPIRE instrument on the Herschel Space Observatory and measured a deficit of surface brightness within their central region after removing detected sources.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hydration dynamics of human fingernails : An ellipsometric study
Benjamin L. Schulz,Danny Chan,Joakim Bäckström,Michael Rübhausen,Klaus-Peter Wittern,S. Wessel,Roger Wepf,S. Williams +7 more
TL;DR: From a simple model, the hydration profiles of "free" and "bound" water during, both, hydration and dehydration are determined and attribute these processes to " free" water incorporated between the keratin filaments and water more tightly "bound", respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
‘Omic’ Approaches to Study Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Virulence
Alvin W. Lo,Danilo Gomes Moriel,Minh-Duy Phan,Benjamin L. Schulz,Timothy J. Kidd,Scott A. Beatson,Mark A. Schembri +6 more
TL;DR: Progress is outlined in understanding of UPEC pathogenesis using genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics and a view for future developments using these exciting forefront technologies is presented.
