Journal ArticleDOI
PTEN, a Putative Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase Gene Mutated in Human Brain, Breast, and Prostate Cancer
Jing Li,Clifford Yen,Danny Liaw,Katrina Podsypanina,Shikha Bose,Steven I. Wang,Janusz Puc,Christa Miliaresis,Linda Rodgers,Richard W. McCombie,Sandra H. Bigner,Beppino C. Giovanella,Michael Ittmann,B. Tycko,Hanina Hibshoosh,Michael Wigler,Ramon Parsons +16 more
TL;DR: The PTEN product has a protein tyrosine phosphatase domain and extensive homology to tensin, a protein that interacts with actin filaments at focal adhesions as discussed by the authors.
Journal ArticleDOI
TERT promoter mutations occur frequently in gliomas and a subset of tumors derived from cells with low rates of self-renewal
Patrick J. Killela,Zachary J. Reitman,Yuchen Jiao,Chetan Bettegowda,Nishant Agrawal,Luis A. Diaz,Allan H. Friedman,Henry S. Friedman,Gary L. Gallia,Beppino C. Giovanella,Arthur P. Grollman,Tong-Chuan He,Yiping He,Ralph H. Hruban,George I. Jallo,Nils Mandahl,Alan K. Meeker,Fredrik Mertens,George J. Netto,B.K. Ahmed Rasheed,Gregory J. Riggins,Thomas A. Rosenquist,Mark Schiffman,Ie Ming Shih,Dan Theodorescu,Michael Torbenson,Victor E. Velculescu,Tian Li Wang,Nicolas Wentzensen,Laura D. Wood,Ming Zhang,Roger E. McLendon,Darell D. Bigner,Kenneth W. Kinzler,Bert Vogelstein,Nickolas Papadopoulos,Hai Yan +36 more
TL;DR: TERT and ATRX mutations were mutually exclusive, suggesting that these two genetic mechanisms confer equivalent selective growth advantages and provide a biomarker that may be useful for the early detection of urinary tract and liver tumors and aid in the classification and prognostication of brain tumors.
Journal ArticleDOI
Selective heat sensitivity of cancer cells. Biochemical and clinical studies.
Renato Cavaliere,Enrico C. Ciocatto,Beppino C. Giovanella,Charles Heidelberger,Robert O. Johnson,Mario Margottini,Bruno Mondovi,Guido Moricca,A. Rossi-Fanelli +8 more
TL;DR: No conclusions about survivals can be drawn at present although four of seven patients with malignant melanomas treated only by heat perfusion are alive and well with functional limbs 28, 27, 11 and 7 months after treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
DNA topoisomerase I--targeted chemotherapy of human colon cancer in xenografts
Beppino C. Giovanella,John S. Stehlin,Monroe E. Wall,Mansukh C. Wani,Allan W. Nicholas,Leroy F. Liu,Robert Silber,Milan Potmesil +7 more
TL;DR: Unlike other anticancer drugs tested, 20(RS)-9-amino-camptothecin (9-AC) induced disease-free remissions and the overall drug toxicity was low and allowed for repeated courses of treatment.
Journal Article
In vitro growth characteristics of embryo fibroblasts isolated from p53-deficient mice.
Michele Harvey,Arthur T. Sands,Robert S. Weiss,Monika E. Hegi,Roger W. Wiseman,P. Pantazis,Beppino C. Giovanella,Michael A. Tainsky,Allan Bradley,Lawrence A. Donehower +9 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that the loss of p53 by itself is insufficient to confer immortality on a cell, but does confer a growth advantage, confirming that the absence of p 53 promotes genomic instability, which in turn may result in genetic alterations which directly produce immortality.
