Interferon-α–Induced TRAIL on Natural Killer Cells Is Associated With Control of Hepatitis C Virus Infection
Kerstin A. Stegmann,Kerstin A. Stegmann,Niklas K. Björkström,Heike Veber,Sandra Ciesek,Peggy Riese,Johannes Wiegand,Johannes Hadem,Pothakamuri Venkata Suneetha,Jerzy Jaroszewicz,Chun Wang,Verena Schlaphoff,P. Fytili,Markus Cornberg,Michael P. Manns,Robert Geffers,Thomas Pietschmann,Carlos A. Guzmán,Hans-Gustaf Ljunggren,Heiner Wedemeyer +19 more
TL;DR: IfNalpha-induced expression of TRAIL on NK cells is associated with control of HCV infection; these observations might account for the second-phase decline in HCV-RNA levels during PEG-IFNalpha therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence factors by subinhibitory concentrations of azithromycin and other macrolide antibiotics
TL;DR: Results indicate that newer macrolides and especially axithromycin are endowed with a remarkable ability to inhibit in vitro the expression of a number of physiological processes that are considered more essential than replication in the pathogenesis of P. aeruginosa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Vaccines against typhoid fever.
Carlos A. Guzmán,Stefan Borsutzky,Monika Griot-Wenk,Ian C Metcalfe,Jon Pearman,Andre Collioud,Didier Favre,Guido Dietrich +7 more
TL;DR: The advantages and disadvantages of the various approaches taken in the development of a vaccine against typhoid fever are discussed, along with the potential for future vaccine candidates.
Journal ArticleDOI
Wild-type HFE protein normalizes transferrin iron accumulation in macrophages from subjects with hereditary hemochromatosis.
Giuliana Montosi,Paola Paglia,Cinzia Garuti,Carlos A. Guzmán,Judy M. Bastin,Mario P. Colombo,Antonello Pietrangelo +6 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that the iron-deficient phenotype of HC macrophages is a direct effect of the HFE mutation, and they demonstrate a role for HFE in the accumulation of iron in these cells.
Journal ArticleDOI
Green fluorescent protein-based reporter systems for genetic analysis of bacteria including monocopy applications
Antonio Suárez,Andrea Güttler,Michael Strätz,Lothar H. Staendner,Kenneth N. Timmis,Carlos A. Guzmán +5 more
TL;DR: To achieve sensitivity levels necessary for use in monocopy applications and for detection of single cells, the 3'-end of gfp was replaced by that of a modified gfp gene characterized by a 45-fold stronger fluorescence signal than that exhibited by the natural GFP.
