Journal ArticleDOI

Detection of high levels of European bat lyssavirus type-1 viral RNA in the thyroid gland of experimentally-infected Eptesicus fuscus bats.

TL;DR: It is speculated that the infection of the thyroid gland may cause subacute thyroiditis, a transient form of thyroiditis causing hyperthyroidism, resulting in changes in adrenocortical activity that could lead to hormonal dysfunction, thereby distinguishing the clinical presentation of rabies in the rabid host.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anatomy of the Cape Cod Oral Rabies Vaccination Program

TL;DR: Algeo et al. as mentioned in this paper described a local rabies control program and efforts to restore Cape Cod, MA to terrestrial rabies-free status, after a 2004 oral rabies vaccination (ORV) barrier breach following 10 years of rabies free status.
Journal ArticleDOI

High prevalence of antibodies against canine adenovirus (CAV) type 2 in domestic dog populations in South Africa precludes the use of CAV-based recombinant rabies vaccines

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that pre-existing antibodies against CAV, such as naturally occurs in South African dogs, inhibits the development of neutralizing antibodies against RABV when immunized with a CAV-based rabies recombinant vaccine.
Journal ArticleDOI

Use of a single anti-nucleocapsid monoclonal antibody to detect rabies antigen in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues

TL;DR: The history and clinical appearance suggest the chronic stage of the disease, from which virus was still recoverable, and it seems probable that cases of PLSD may go unnoticed in this country or are mistaken for such conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Time series analysis of the impact of oral vaccination on raccoon rabies in West Virginia, 1990-2007.

TL;DR: The results of the model indicate that the effect of the ORV intervention to control raccoon rabies was statistically significant, and ORV should be attempted in other enzootic racoon rabies areas.
