Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis C virus nonstructural protein 4B: a journey into unexplored territory.
TL;DR: Progress in this direction should yield important insights into the functional architecture of the HCV replication complex and may reveal new opportunities for antiviral intervention against a leading cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma worldwide.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis C virus protein expression causes calcium‐mediated mitochondrial bioenergetic dysfunction and nitro‐oxidative stress
Claudia Piccoli,Rosella Scrima,Giovanni Quarato,Annamaria D'Aprile,Maria Ripoli,Lucia Lecce,Domenico Boffoli,Darius Moradpour,Nazzareno Capitanio +8 more
TL;DR: It was shown that HCV protein expression has a profound effect on cell oxidative metabolism, with specific inhibition of complex I activity, depression of mitochondrial membrane potential and oxidative phosphorylation coupling efficiency, increased production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, as well as loss of the Pasteur effect.
Journal ArticleDOI
Critical challenges and emerging opportunities in hepatitis C virus research in an era of potent antiviral therapy: Considerations for scientists and funding agencies
Ralf Bartenschlager,Ralf Bartenschlager,Thomas F. Baumert,Jens Bukh,Michael Houghton,Stanley M. Lemon,Brett D. Lindenbach,Volker Lohmann,Darius Moradpour,Thomas Pietschmann,Charles M. Rice,Robert Thimme,Takaji Wakita +12 more
TL;DR: It is very unlikely that global eradication and elimination of the cancer risk associated with HCV infection can be achieved without a vaccine, yet research in that direction receives little attention and funding for HCV research must be sustained.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatitis E Virus seroprevalence and chronic infections in patients with HIV, Switzerland.
Alain Kenfak-Foguena,Franziska Schöni-Affolter,Philippe Bürgisser,Andrea Witteck,Katharine E A Darling,Helen Kovari,Laurent Kaiser,John Evison,Luigia Elzi,Vanina Gurtner De La Fuente,Josef Jost,Darius Moradpour,Florence Abravanel,Jacques Izopet,Matthias Cavassini +14 more
TL;DR: Findings suggest chronic HEV infection should be considered as a cause of persistent alanine aminotransferase elevation in patients with low CD4 cell counts.
Journal ArticleDOI
GLUT3 is induced during epithelial-mesenchymal transition and promotes tumor cell proliferation in non-small cell lung cancer
Mark Masin,Jessica Vazquez,Simona Rossi,Svenja Groeneveld,Natasha Samson,Petra C. Schwalie,Bart Deplancke,Laura E. Frawley,Jérôme Gouttenoire,Darius Moradpour,Trudy G. Oliver,Etienne Meylan +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the neuronal glucose transporter GLUT3 contributes to glucose uptake and proliferation of lung tumor cells that have undergone an EMT and demonstrate that GLUT-3 is strongly expressed in mesenchymal but not epithelial cells, a finding corroborated in hepatoma cells.
