Journal ArticleDOI
Endosperm cellularization defines an important developmental transition for embryo development
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that AGL62 is a direct target gene of FIS Polycomb group repressive complex 2 (PRC2), establishing the molecular basis for FIS PRC2-mediated endosperm cellularization.
Journal ArticleDOI
H3K27me3 profiling of the endosperm implies exclusion of polycomb group protein targeting by DNA methylation.
Isabelle Weinhofer,Elisabeth Hehenberger,Pawel Roszak,Lars Hennig,Lars Hennig,Claudia Köhler,Claudia Köhler +6 more
TL;DR: This study revealed that selected transposable elements and protein coding genes are specifically targeted by the FIS PcG complex in the endosperm, whereas these elements and genes are densely marked by DNA methylation in vegetative tissues, suggesting that DNA methylations prevents targeting by PcGs proteins in vegetatives tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI
A distinct lineage of giant viruses brings a rhodopsin photosystem to unicellular marine predators.
David M. Needham,Susumu Yoshizawa,Toshiaki Hosaka,Camille Poirier,Camille Poirier,Chang Jae Choi,Chang Jae Choi,Elisabeth Hehenberger,Elisabeth Hehenberger,Nicholas A.T. Irwin,Susanne Wilken,Cheuk Man Yung,Cheuk Man Yung,Charles Bachy,Rika Kurihara,Yu Nakajima,Keiichi Kojima,Tomomi Kimura-Someya,Guy Leonard,Rex R. Malmstrom,Daniel R. Mende,Daniel K. Olson,Yuki Sudo,Sebastian Sudek,Thomas A. Richards,Edward F. DeLong,Patrick J. Keeling,Alyson E. Santoro,Mikako Shirouzu,Wataru Iwasaki,Alexandra Z. Worden,Alexandra Z. Worden +31 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the rhodopsin shared by ChoanoViruses and PgV binds retinal and pumps protons when illuminated, indicating that light-dependent energy transfer systems are likely common components of giant viruses of photosynthetic and phagotrophic marine eukaryotes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Non-photosynthetic predators are sister to red algae
Ryan M.R. Gawryluk,Ryan M.R. Gawryluk,Denis V. Tikhonenkov,Denis V. Tikhonenkov,Elisabeth Hehenberger,Elisabeth Hehenberger,Filip Husnik,Alexander P. Mylnikov,Patrick J. Keeling +8 more
TL;DR: These findings alter views of the origins of Rhodophyta, and Archaeplastida evolution as a whole, as they indicate that mixotrophic feeding—that is, a combination of predation and phototrophy—persisted well into the evolution of the group.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The development of genetic tools in a range of protists primarily from marine environments are reported on, providing a roadmap for developing genetically tractable organisms.
