Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Control of Dynamic Properties of InAs/InAlGaAs/InP Hybrid Quantum Well‐Quantum Dot Structures Designed as Active Parts of 1.55 μm Emitting Lasers

Contactless electroreflectance (CER) spectroscopy has been applied to study the energy difference between electron subbands in AlInN∕GaInN multiquantum wells (MQWs). Due to the strong built-in electric field, which is typical for III-nitrides, interband transitions between all QW subbands have been clearly observed. The energy difference between electron subbands has been found analyzing the interband transitions between the first hole subband and electron subbands. It has been shown that this difference is consistent with the results obtained by using photoinduced absorption of intersubband transitions. It shows that CER is an excellent method to study the energy difference between electron subbands in Al(In)N∕Ga(In)N QWs.

Energy difference between electron subbands in AlInN∕GaInN quantum wells studied by contactless electroreflectance spectroscopy

Contactless electroreflectance (CER) has been applied to study the AlGaN potential-barrier height in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures without and with a SiN passivation layer. In the case of an unpassivated structure, an AlGaN band-edge signal with a strong Franz–Keldysh oscillation (FKO) was observed. On the basis of the FKO period, the surface potential barrier has been determined to be ∼1.1 eV. For the SiN passivated structure, a broad CER signal without FKO appears at the AlGaN edge. This observation is associated with a decrease in the height of the surface potential barrier, i.e., a shift in the Fermi level position at the AlGaN surface toward the conduction band.

Contactless electroreflectance evidence for reduction in the surface potential barrier in AlGaN/GaN heterostructures passivated by SiN layer

A sol–gel method for the synthesis of nanosized powders of yttrium disilicate doped with Tb3 + is presented. The influence of grain size and annealing temperature on the structure and luminescence properties of the materials obtained has been investigated. The preparation of glass-ceramic composite has been also described. The effect of incorporating the nanocrystals into sol–gel silica glasses on their physicochemical properties has been shown and discussed. A lack of influence of the annealing above 1300°C on the lifetimes measured for the nanocrystals embedded in the glass, as compared to the Y2Si2O7:Tb3 + powders, has been observed.
