Meta-analysis of fecal metagenomes reveals global microbial signatures that are specific for colorectal cancer
Jakob Wirbel,Paul Theodor Pyl,Paul Theodor Pyl,Ece Kartal,Konrad Zych,Alireza Kashani,Alessio Milanese,Jonas S. Fleck,Anita Y. Voigt,Albert Pallejà,Ruby Ponnudurai,Shinichi Sunagawa,Luis Pedro Coelho,Petra Schrotz-King,Emily Vogtmann,Nina Habermann,Emma Niméus,Andrew Maltez Thomas,Andrew Maltez Thomas,Paolo Manghi,Sara Gandini,Davide Serrano,Sayaka Mizutani,Sayaka Mizutani,Hirotsugu Shiroma,Satoshi Shiba,Tatsuhiro Shibata,Shinichi Yachida,Takuji Yamada,Takuji Yamada,Levi Waldron,Alessio Naccarati,Nicola Segata,Rashmi Sinha,Cornelia M. Ulrich,Hermann Brenner,Manimozhiyan Arumugam,Manimozhiyan Arumugam,Peer Bork,Georg Zeller +39 more
TL;DR: A meta-analysis of eight geographically and technically diverse fecal shotgun metagenomic studies of colorectal cancer identified a core set of 29 species significantly enriched in CRC metagenomes, establishing globally generalizable, predictive taxonomic and functional microbiome CRC signatures as a basis for future diagnostics.
Journal ArticleDOI
Metabolic and physiological interdependencies in the Bathymodiolus azoricus symbiosis
Ruby Ponnudurai,Manuel Kleiner,Lizbeth Sayavedra,Jillian M. Petersen,Jillian M. Petersen,Martin Moche,Andreas Otto,Doerte Becher,Takeshi Takeuchi,Noriyuki Satoh,Nicole Dubilier,Thomas Schweder,Stephanie Markert +12 more
TL;DR: This study used a combination of proteomics and genomics to investigate the physiology and metabolism of the individual symbiotic partners of the hydrothermal vent mussel B. azoricus and its symbionts and identified numerous ‘symbiosis-specific’ host proteins that are likely involved in symbiont digestion and carbon transfer from the symbionte to the host.
Journal ArticleDOI
Abundant toxin-related genes in the genomes of beneficial symbionts from deep-sea hydrothermal vent mussels
Lizbeth Sayavedra,Manuel Kleiner,Ruby Ponnudurai,Silke Wetzel,Eric Pelletier,Eric Pelletier,Valérie Barbe,Nori Satoh,Eiichi Shoguchi,Dennis Fink,Corinna Breusing,Thorsten B. H. Reusch,Philip Rosenstiel,Markus Schilhabel,Dörte Becher,Thomas Schweder,Stephanie Markert,Nicole Dubilier,Nicole Dubilier,Jillian M. Petersen +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors sequenced the SOX symbiont genomes from two Bathymodiolus species and found abundant and diverse array of genes similar to insecticidal toxins of nematode and aphid symbionts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Nitrogen fixation in a chemoautotrophic lucinid symbiosis.
Sten König,Olivier Gros,Stefan E. Heiden,Tjorven Hinzke,Andrea Thürmer,Anja Poehlein,Susann Meyer,Magalie Vatin,Didier Mbéguié-A-Mbéguié,Jennifer Tocny,Ruby Ponnudurai,Rolf Daniel,Dörte Becher,Thomas Schweder,Stephanie Markert +14 more
TL;DR: A hitherto completely unrecognized feature of the C. orbicularis symbiont's physiology is revealed: the symbionT's genome encodes all proteins necessary for biological nitrogen fixation (diazotrophy), a scenario that is unprecedented in comparable chemoautotrophic symbioses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Genome sequence of the sulfur-oxidizing Bathymodiolus thermophilus gill endosymbiont
Ruby Ponnudurai,Lizbeth Sayavedra,Manuel Kleiner,Stefan E. Heiden,Andrea Thürmer,Horst Felbeck,Rabea Schlüter,Stefan M. Sievert,Rolf Daniel,Thomas Schweder,Stephanie Markert +10 more
TL;DR: The first draft genome sequence of the sulfur-oxidizing symbiont of B. thermophilus is reported, which revealed pathways for the use of sulfide and thiosulfate as energy sources and encodes the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle for CO2 fixation.
