Journal ArticleDOI

Photonic crystals cause active colour change in chameleons

TL;DR: It is shown that chameleons shift colour through active tuning of a lattice of guanine nanocrystals within a superficial thick layer of dermal iridophores, which allows some species to combine efficient camouflage with spectacular display, while potentially providing passive thermal protection.
Journal ArticleDOI

RNA interference in Lepidoptera: An overview of successful and unsuccessful studies and implications for experimental design

Olle Terenius, +78 more
TL;DR: Despite a large variation in the data, trends that are found are that RNAi is particularly successful in the family Saturniidae and in genes involved in immunity and that gene expression in epidermal tissues seems to be most difficult to silence.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Gene-Based Linkage Map for Bicyclus anynana Butterflies Allows for a Comprehensive Analysis of Synteny with the Lepidopteran Reference Genome

TL;DR: Strong conservation of gene assignment to chromosomes is observed, but also evidence for numerous large- and small-scale chromosomal rearrangements is observed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Precise colocalization of interacting structural and pigmentary elements generates extensive color pattern variation in Phelsuma lizards.

TL;DR: The results indicate the need to identify the developmental mechanisms responsible for the control of the size, shape, and orientation of nanocrystals, and the superposition of specific chromatophore types in Phelsuma lizards.
