Abstract: In the rising era of bio-economy, the five carbon compound 1,5-diaminopentane receives increasing interest as platform chemical, especially as innovative building block for bio-based polymers. The vital interest in bio-based supply of 1,5-diaminopentane has strongly stimulated research on the development of engineered producer strains. Based on the state-of-art knowledge on the pathways and reactions linked to microbial 1,5-diaminopentane metabolism, the review covers novel systems metabolic engineering approaches towards hyper-producing cell factories of Corynebacterium glutamicum or Escherichia coli. This is integrated into the whole value chain from renewable feedstocks via 1,5-diaminopentane to innovative biopolymers involving bioprocess engineering considerations for economic supply.

Abstract: The chelating agent ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) is not degraded by conventional biological and physicochemical methods for the treatment of wastewater and the purification of drinking water. Of the measurable organic compounds it is the one present at the highest concentration in many surface and drinking waters. In recent years, however, studies have demonstrated that EDTA can be degraded by specially enriched bacterial cultures and in wastewater treatment plants receiving EDTA-containing effluents. The amounts of EDTA released into the aquatic environment could thus be reduced by establishing appropriate biological wastewater treatment plants. This article describes the degradation of EDTA and its metal chelates by different bacterial cultures, catabolic steps in EDTA degradation, and biological methods for the removal of this chelating agent from wastewaters.

Abstract: We look at the task of computing the time-evolution of a non-linear system for a long time, in our case under random external influences. Our specific example is the fatigue evaluation of a wind turbine. To facilitate such a computation, we look at a reduction of the computational effort by projecting everything on a low-dimensional basis. In this case we take the Karhunen-Loeve basis generated from running the model a little while under the random loading. It is important that the error which is caused by this reduction process can be controlled. We estimate the error by dual or adjoint methods. This in turn allows the process of model reduction to be performed adaptively.

Abstract: We present a general technique for hiding a classical bit in multipartite quantum states. The hidden bit, encoded in the choice of one of two possible density operators, cannot be recovered by local operations and classical communication without quantum communication. The scheme remains secure if quantum communication is allowed between certain partners, and can be designed for any choice of quantum communication patterns to be secure, but to allow near perfect recovery for all other patterns. No entanglement is needed since the hiding states can be chosen to be separable. A single ebit of prior entanglement is not sufficient to break the scheme.

Abstract: We present a new method for diparental mating with the outstanding advantage that counterselection of the Escherichia coli donor strain is not required. This improved method uses a new donor strain, E. coli ST18, a hemA deletion mutant defective in tetrapyrrole biosynthesis. The hemA mutation can be complemented by addition of 5-aminolevulinic acid. Therefore, counterselection is carried out only using standard media and growth conditions optimal for the recipient strain. Consequently, recipient strains are isolated in a significantly shorter period.
