TL;DR: In this paper, different stacking modes of 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole (ADPI) were constructed with the aid of intermolecular interactions.
Abstract: Different luminescent single crystals of 2-(anthracen-9-yl)-4,5-diphenyl-1H-imidazole (ADPI) were obtained through the construction of different stacking modes with the aid of intermolecular interactions. Both the fluorescence and the stacking mode of the crystals can be reversibly tuned by mechanical and thermal forces to render ADPI piezochromic, which represents a unique example of reversibly controlled solid emission. The regulation of π–π stacking between the anthracene planes by mechanical and thermal forces is suggested to be the main driving force for the piezochromic character of ADPI.

TL;DR: The finite-time synchronization between two complex dynamical networks via the periodically intermittent adaptive control and the intermittently intermittent feedback control is studied.
Abstract: In this paper, the finite-time synchronization between two complex dynamical networks via the periodically intermittent adaptive control and the periodically intermittent feedback control is studied. The finite-time synchronization criteria are derived based on finite-time stability theory, the differential inequality and the analysis technique. Since the traditional synchronization criteria for some models are improved in the convergence time by using the novel periodically intermittent adaptive control and periodically intermittent feedback control, the results of this paper are important. Numerical examples are finally presented to illustrate the effectiveness and correctness of the theoretical results.

TL;DR: The data demonstrate that miR-22 could inhibit apoptosis of cardiomyocytes through one of its targets, CBP, and may constitute a new therapeutic target for the prevention of myocardial I/R injury.
Abstract: MicroRNAs are extensively involved in the pathogenesis of major cardiovascular diseases by suppressing target gene expression. Recent studies have reported that microRNA-22 (miR-22) may be implicated in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) induced myocardial injury. However, the specific function of miR-22 in myocardial I/R injury is far from clear nowadays. The present study was designed to determine the role of miR-22 in myocardial I/R injury and investigate the underlying cardio-protective mechanism. The rat myocardial I/R injury model was induced by occluding the left anterior descending coronary artery for 30 min followed by 12 h reperfusion. As predicted, adenovirus-mediated miR-22 overexpression markedly reduced the release of creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase, infarct size and cardiomyocytes apoptosis. Moreover, CREB binding protein (CBP) as a potential miR-22 target by bioinformatics was significantly inhibited after miR-22 transfection. We also found that p53 acetylation activity, pro-apoptotic related genes Bax and p21 levels were all decreased associated with the down-regulation of CBP. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that miR-22 could inhibit apoptosis of cardiomyocytes through one of its targets, CBP. Thus, miR-22 may constitute a new therapeutic target for the prevention of myocardial I/R injury.

TL;DR: It is concluded that water leakage could be further reduced by improving leakage detection capability through a combination of predictive modeling and monitoring instruments, optimizing pipe maintenance strategy, and developing an instant pressure regulation system.
Abstract: Water supply is the primary element of an urban system. Due to rapid urbanization and water scarcity, maintaining a stable and safe water supply has become a challenge to many cities, whereas a large amount of water is lost from the pipes of distribution systems. Water leakage is not only a waste of water resources, but also incurs great socio-economic costs. This article presents a comprehensive review on the potential water leakage control approaches and specifically discusses the benefits of each to environmental conservation. It is concluded that water leakage could be further reduced by improving leakage detection capability through a combination of predictive modeling and monitoring instruments, optimizing pipe maintenance strategy, and developing an instant pressure regulation system. The environment could benefit from these actions because of water savings and the reduction of energy consumption as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that the SurgimapSpine measurement is an equivalent measuring tool to the traditional manual in coronal Cobb angle, but is advantageous in spino-pelvic measurement in T2-T5, PT, PI, SS, and LL.
Abstract: Although many studies on reliability and reproducibility of measurement have been performed on coronal Cobb angle, few results about reliability and reproducibility are reported on sagittal alignment measurement including the pelvis. We usually use SurgimapSpine software to measure the Cobb angle in our studies; however, there are no reports till date on its reliability and reproducible measurements. Sixty-eight standard standing posteroanterior whole-spine radiographs were reviewed. Three examiners carried out the measurements independently under the settings of manual measurement on X-ray radiographies and SurgimapSpine software on the computer. Parameters measured included pelvic incidence, sacral slope, pelvic tilt, Lumbar lordosis (LL), thoracic kyphosis, and coronal Cobb angle. SPSS 16.0 software was used for statistical analyses. The means, standard deviations, intraclass and interclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. There was no notable difference between the two tools (P = 0.21) for the coronal Cobb angle. In the sagittal plane parameters, the ICC of intraobserver reliability for the manual measures varied from 0.65 (T2–T5 angle) to 0.95 (LL angle). Further, for SurgimapSpine tool, the ICC ranged from 0.75 to 0.98. No significant difference in intraobserver reliability was found between the two measurements (P > 0.05). As for the interobserver reliability, measurements with SurgimapSpine tool had better ICC (0.71 to 0.98 vs 0.59 to 0.96) and Pearson’s coefficient (0.76 to 0.99 vs 0.60 to 0.97). The reliability of SurgimapSpine measures was significantly higher in all parameters except for the coronal Cobb angle where the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). Although the differences between the two methods are very small, the results of this study indicate that the SurgimapSpine measurement is an equivalent measuring tool to the traditional manual in coronal Cobb angle, but is advantageous in spino-pelvic measurement in T2-T5, PT, PI, SS, and LL.

TL;DR: Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are isomers, and both of them exhibit two-dimensional structures with the same uninodal 3-connected fes topology, and suggested that the structural diversity of the compounds could be tuned by altering the auxiliary ligand.
Abstract: A series of zinc(II) compounds, [Zn2(btca)2(im)2]·(DMA) (1; H2btca = benzotriazole-5-carboxylate acid, im = imidazole, and DMA = N,N-dimethylacetamide), [Zn(btca)(im)]·(DMF) (2; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), [Zn2(btca)2(tmdpy)]·2(DMF)·5(H2O) [3; tmdpy = 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane], and [H2N(CH3)2]2[Zn3(btca)4]·(DMF) (4), have been successfully synthesized via rational control of experimental conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that compounds 1 and 2 are isomers, and both of them exhibit two-dimensional structures with the same uninodal 3-connected fes topology. Additionally, the three-dimensional (3D) structure of 3 was obtained by using tmdpy instead of an im ligand under synthesis conditions similar to those of compound 2. Interestingly, compound 3 presents a pillared-layer structure with a (3,4)-connected (4.82.103)(4.82) topology. When 4,4′-bipyridine was used to replace tmdpy, the assembly between Zn2+ ions and H2btca ligands produced a chiral 3D framework of 4. Furthermore, ...

TL;DR: In this article, double-walled core-shell structured Si@SiO2@C nanocomposite has been prepared by calcination of silicon nanoparticles in air and subsequent carbon coating.
Abstract: Double-walled core-shell structured Si@SiO2@C nanocomposite has been prepared by calcination of silicon nanoparticles in air and subsequent carbon coating. The obtained Si@SiO2@C nanocomposite demonstrates a reversible specific capacity of about 786 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1 with a capacity fading of 0.13 % per cycle. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be due to that the double walls of carbon and SiO2 improve the electronic conductivity and enhance the compatibility of electrode materials and electrolyte as a result of accommodating the significant volumetric change during cycles. The interlayer SiO2 may release the mechanical strain and enhance the interfacial adhesion between carbon shell and silicon core.

TL;DR: In this paper, an exact 2D analytical method is proposed to calculate the magnetic field distribution in a concentric magnetic gear with Halbach permanent-magnet arrays, and analyzes the relationship between the parameters and maximum static torque.
Abstract: Concentric magnetic gears hold a promising future in the field of low speed and high torque. To obtain a sinusoidal distribution of air gap magnetic field, in this paper, exact 2-D analytical method is proposed to calculate the magnetic field distribution in a concentric magnetic gear with Halbach permanent-magnet arrays, and analyzes the relationship between the parameters and maximum static torque, the parameters include width of modulating ring core, height of modulating ring and thickness of outer rotor yoke. Compared air-gap magnetic field distributions computed by the analytical method with those obtained from the 2-D finite-element method (FEM), the analytical and the FEM results are in good accordance, which proves the proposed method is correct and effective. According to the results of parameters analysis, the concentric magnetic gear prototype is produced, which the numbers of pole pairs on the inner and outer rotors are 4 and 17, respectively. The test results show reasonable structural parameters can improve the torque density of magnetic gears, and the design of magnetic gear provides a useful reference.

TL;DR: This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of VTI in differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules and acoustic radiation force impulse elastography.
Abstract: Objectives- Acoustic radiation force impulse elastography is a newly developed ultrasound elasticity imaging technique that included both Virtual Touch tissue quantification and Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI; Siemens Medical Solutions, Mountain View, CA). This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of VTI in differentiating malignant from benign thyroid nodules. Methods- This study included 192 consecutive patients with thyroid nodules (n = 219) who underwent surgery for compressive symptoms or suspicion of malignancy. Tissue stiffness on VTI elastography was scored from 1 (soft) to 6 (hard). The VTI scores between malignant and benign thyroid nodules were compared. The intraobserver and interobserver agreement for VTI elastography was also assessed. Results- On VTI elastography: score 1 was found in 84 nodules (all benign); score 2 in 37 nodules (3 papillary carcinomas and 34 benign nodules); score 3 in 25 nodules (1 medullary carcinoma, 6 papillary carcinomas, and 18 benign nodules); score 4 in 53 nodules (50 papillary carcinomas and 3 benign nodules); score 5 in 17 nodules (14 papillary carcinomas and 3 benign nodules); and score 6 in 3 nodules (all papillary carcinomas). A VTI elasticity score of 4 or greater was highly predictive of malignancy (P< .01), and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy were 87.0% (67 of 77), 95.8% (136 of 142), 91.8% (67 of 73), 93.1% (136 of 146), and 92.7% (203 of 219), respectively. The κ values were 0.69 for intraobserver agreement and 0.85 for interobserver agreement. Conclusions- Virtual Touch tissue elasticity imaging has great potential as an adjunctive tool combined with conventional sonography for differential diagnosis between benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

TL;DR: The in vitro and in vivo assays showed that overexpression of miR-371-5p resulted in cell proliferation and increased tumor growth, which was associated with inhibitor of growth 1 (ING1) downregulation, which may have a critical role in PDAC.
Abstract: Background microRNAs (miRNAs) play a critical role in tumorigenesis, either as a tumor suppressor or as an oncogenic miRNA, depending on different tumor types. To date, scientists have obtained a substantial amount of knowledge with regard to miRNAs in pancreatic cancer. However, the expression and function of miR-371-5p in pancreatic cancer has not been clearly elucidated. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of miR-371-5p in pancreatic cancer and its association with the survival of patients with pancreatic cancer. Methods The expression of miR-371-5p was examined in pancreatic duct adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and their adjacent normal pancreatic tissues (ANPT) or in pancreatic cancer cell lines by qRT-PCR. The association of miR-371-5p expression with overall survival was determined. The proliferation and apoptosis of SW-1990 and Panc-1 cells, transfected with miR-371-5p mimics or inhibitor, were assessed using MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. The tumorigenicity was evaluated via mice xenograft experiments. miR-371-5p promoter interactions were analyzed by chromatin immunoprecipitation assays (ChIP). Protein expression was analyzed by Western blot. Results The expression level of miR-371-5p was dramatically upregulated in clinical PDAC tissues compared with ANPT. Patients with high miR-371-5p expression had a significantly shorter survival than those with low miR-371-5p expression. The in vitro and in vivo assays showed that overexpression of miR-371-5p resulted in cell proliferation and increased tumor growth, which was associated with inhibitor of growth 1 (ING1) downregulation. Interestingly, we also found that ING1, in turn, inhibited expression of miR-371-5p in the promoter region. Conclusions our study demonstrates a novel ING1-miR-371-5p regulatory feedback loop, which may have a critical role in PDAC. Thus miR-371-5p can prove to be a novel prognostic factor and therapeutic target for pancreatic cancer treatment.
