TL;DR: A CNN-based multi-spectral LiDAR land-cover classification framework is proposed and the constructed CNN model with the optimized hyper-parameters is superior in computational performance and classification accuracies.
Abstract: Multispectral LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) is characterized of the completeness and consistency of its spectrum and spatial geometric data, which provides a new data source for land-cover classification In recent years, the convolutional neural network (CNN), compared with traditional machine learning methods, has made a series of breakthroughs in image classification, object detection, and image semantic segmentation due to its stronger feature learning and feature expression abilities However, traditional CNN models suffer from some issues, such as a large number of layers, leading to higher computational cost To address this problem, we propose a CNN-based multi-spectral LiDAR land-cover classification framework and analyze its optimal parameters to improve classification accuracy This framework starts with the preprocessing of multi-spectral 3D LiDAR data into 2D images Next, a CNN model is constructed with seven fundamental functional layers, and its hyper-parameters are comprehensively discussed and optimized The constructed CNN model with the optimized hyper-parameters was tested on the Titan multi-spectral LiDAR data, which include three wavelengths of 532 nm, 1064 nm, and 1550 nm Extensive experiments demonstrated that the constructed CNN with the optimized hyper-parameters is feasible for multi-spectral LiDAR land-cover classification tasks Compared with the classical CNN models (ie, AlexNet, VGG16 and ResNet50) and our previous studies, our constructed CNN model with the optimized hyper-parameters is superior in computational performance and classification accuracies

TL;DR: In this paper, water table fluctuations were measured from October 2011 through August 2013, by 58 monitoring wells distributed on four physiognomies of the undisturbed cerrado.
Abstract: Large areas of the Brazilian savanna (cerrado) have been converted into farmland in recent years; however, little attention has been paid to the consequences of this land use and land cover change on groundwater recharge. Here, we assessed groundwater recharge in different physiognomies of the cerrado located in an outcrop area of the Guarani Aquifer System. Water table fluctuations were measured from October 2011 through August 2013, by 58 monitoring wells distributed on four physiognomies of the undisturbed cerrado. We used multiple monitoring wells located in “campo limpo” (cerrado grassland), “campo sujo” (shrub cerrado), “campo cerrado” (open wooded cerrado), and “cerrado sensu stricto” (wooded cerrado), cover types. Recharge rates were computed for each well using the water table fluctuation method. The measured precipitation for hydrological years 2011–2012 and 2012–2013 were 1247 and 1194 mm, respectively. We found values of average annual recharge of 363 ± 87 mm, 354 ± 85 mm, 324 ± 78 mm, and 315 ± 76 mm for “campo limpo,” “campo sujo,” “campo cerrado,” and “cerrado sensu stricto,” respectively. Our results suggest that recharge tends to decrease with the increase in the density of vegetation (grassland to woodland). These results indicate that water table depth may have an influence on the cerrado physiognomies or vice versa. Furthermore, replacement of undisturbed dense cerrado with croplands will likely alter recharge dynamics. Therefore, sound management of land use and land cover is needed to ensure future groundwater quantity and quality.

TL;DR: It is suggested that laboratory studies should be encouraged as a way of complementing the field research on the activity patterns, reproduction, and feeding behavior of Brazilian Chelidae species (freshwater side-necked turtles).
Abstract: The knowledge on natural history of some Brazilian chelonian species is still scarce what makes it difficult to ascertain ecological and evolutionary histories. Data like this, however, can be used as fundamental tools for species management and conservation. A survey was made on the activity patterns, reproduction, and feeding behavior of Brazilian Chelidae species (freshwater side-necked turtles) available in the literature. A clear lack of information regarding natural history is evident for most species. The species diversity and the biological importance of this taxon regard it as an interesting target to be studied. Since several Chelidae behaviors (including those reported in this study) are considered stereotyped, I suggest that laboratory studies should be encouraged as a way of complementing the field research.
