TL;DR: Non-communicable diseases comprised the greatest fraction of deaths, contributing to 73·4% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 72·5–74·1) of total deaths in 2017, while communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional causes accounted for 18·6% (17·9–19·6), and injuries 8·0% (7·7–8·2).

TL;DR: An interior-point method for nonlinear programming that enjoys the flexibility of switching between a line search method that computes steps by factoring the primal-dual equations and a trust region method that uses a conjugate gradient iteration.
Abstract: An interior-point method for nonlinear programming is presented It enjoys the flexibility of switching between a line search method that computes steps by factoring the primal-dual equations and a trust region method that uses a conjugate gradient iteration Steps computed by direct factorization are always tried first, but if they are deemed ineffective, a trust region iteration that guarantees progress toward stationarity is invoked To demonstrate its effectiveness, the algorithm is implemented in the Knitro [6,28] software package and is extensively tested on a wide selection of test problems

TL;DR: In this paper, two new estimators for determining the number of factors (r) in static approximate factor models were proposed, based on the well-known fact that the largest eigenvalues of the variance matrix of N response variables grow unboundedly as N increases.
Abstract: This paper proposes two new estimators for determining the number of factors (r) in static approximate factor models We exploit the well-known fact that the r largest eigenvalues of the variance matrix of N response variables grow unboundedly as N increases, while the other eigenvalues remain bounded The new estimators are obtained simply by maximizing the ratio of two adjacent eigenvalues Our simulation results provide promising evidence for the two estimators

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compare the age-wealth distribution produced in life-cycle economies to the corresponding distribution in the US economy and find that the calibrated model economies with earnings and lifetime uncertainty can replicate measures of both aggregate wealth and transfer wealth.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluate guanxi from an ethical perspective, and then attempt to shed light on the sources of its economic advantages and disadvantages through the use of a simple mathematical model, pointing out how eastern and western business practices may already converge toward systems based on more complete models of trust to deal with the conditions of progress coupled with uncertainty that form our new economic reality.
Abstract: Guanxi refers to a Chinese system of doing business on the basis of personal relationships, and it is representative of the way that business is done throughout much of the non-western world. In this paper we first evaluate guanxi from an ethical perspective, and then attempt to shed light on the sources of its economic advantages and disadvantages through the use of a simple mathematical model. Finally, we point out how eastern and western business practices may already be converging toward systems based on more complete models of trust to deal with the conditions of progress coupled with uncertainty that form our new economic reality.
