TL;DR: This framework combines two existing approaches and introduces a new associated cost parameter that serves as a surrogate for customer satisfaction that can be utilised for analysis, modelling and forecasting purposes.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new approach to minimise inventory levels and their associated costs within large geographically dispersed organisations. For such organisations, attaining a high degree of agility is becoming increasingly important. Linear regression-based tools have traditionally been employed to assist human experts in inventory optimisation; endeavours; recently, Neural Network (NN) techniques have been proposed for this domain. The objective of this paper is to create a hybrid framework that can be utilised for analysis, modelling and forecasting purposes. This framework combines two existing approaches and introduces a new associated cost parameter that serves as a surrogate for customer satisfaction. The use of this hybrid framework is described using a running example related to a large geographically dispersed organisation.

15 Oct 2008TL;DR: A method for hiding a list of data by mixing it with a large amount of superfluous items by using a device known as a negative database which stores the complement of a set rather that the set itself to include an arbitrary number of garbage entries efficiently.
Abstract: In this paper we present a method for hiding a list of data by mixing it with a large amount of superfluous items. The technique uses a device known as a negative database which stores the complement of a set rather that the set itself to include an arbitrary number of garbage entries efficiently. The resulting structure effectively hides the data, without encrypting it, and obfuscates the number of data items hidden; it prevents arbitrary data lookups, while supporting simple membership queries; and can be manipulated to reflect relational algebra operations on the original data.

TL;DR: The basic idea is to use statistical models to produce minimum mean square error forecasts and let the data lead us to select an appropriate model to represent their behavior, which produced better forecasts for all lead times, as indicated by the most common measures of forecasting accuracy and precision.
Abstract: Several forecasting algorithms have been proposed to forecast a cumulative variable using its partially accumulated data. Some particular cases of this problem are known in the literature as the "style goods inventory problem" or as "forecasting shipments using firm orders-to-date", among other names. Here we summarize some of the most popular techniques and propose a statistical approach to discriminate among them in an objective data-based way. Our basic idea is to use statistical models to produce minimum mean square error forecasts and let the data lead us to select an appropriate model to represent their behavior. We apply our proposal to some published data showing total accumulated values with constant level and then to two actual sets of data pertaining to the Mexican economy, showing a nonconstant level. The forecasting performance of the statistical models was evaluated by comparing their results against those obtained with algorithmic solutions. In general the models produced better forecasts for all lead times, as indicated by the most common measures of forecasting accuracy and precision.

TL;DR: The authors analyzed the economic history of Mexico 1877-2010 and concluded that the growth 1950-1981 was driven by urbanization, industrialization, and education and that Mexico would have grown even more rapidly if trade and investment had been liberalized sooner.
Abstract: In 1950 Mexico entered an economic takeoff and grew rapidly for more than 30 years. Growth stopped during the crises of 1982-1995, despite major reforms, including liberalization of foreign trade and investment. Since then growth has been modest. We analyze the economic history of Mexico 1877-2010. We conclude that the growth 1950-1981 was driven by urbanization, industrialization, and education and that Mexico would have grown even more rapidly if trade and investment had been liberalized sooner. If Mexico is to resume rapid growth—so that it can approach U.S. levels of income—it needs further reforms.

TL;DR: In this paper, the transfinite propositional provability logics of worms and their corresponding algebras were studied and a generalization of the original well-orderings of worms was presented.
Abstract: This paper studies the transfinite propositional provability logics $\glp_\Lambda$ and their corresponding algebras. These logics have for each ordinal $\xi< \Lambda$ a modality $\la \alpha \ra$. We will focus on the closed fragment of $\glp_\Lambda$ (i.e., where no propositional variables occur) and \emph{worms} therein. Worms are iterated consistency expressions of the form $\la \xi_n\ra \ldots \la \xi_1 \ra \top$. Beklemishev has defined well-orderings $<_\xi$ on worms whose modalities are all at least $\xi$ and presented a calculus to compute the respective order-types.
In the current paper we present a generalization of the original $<_\xi$ orderings and provide a calculus for the corresponding generalized order-types $o_\xi$. Our calculus is based on so-called {\em hyperations} which are transfinite iterations of normal functions.
Finally, we give two different characterizations of those sequences of ordinals which are of the form $\la {\formerOmega}_\xi (A) \ra_{\xi \in \ord}$ for some worm $A$. One of these characterizations is in terms of a second kind of transfinite iteration called {\em cohyperation.}
