TL;DR: The aim is to find the Pareto-optimal solutions by using an epsilon-constraint method on a new mathematical model that is enhanced with a family of valid inequalities and constraints that avoid symmetric solutions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study perturbations of diffeomorphisms that have a saddle connection between a pair of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and develop a first-order deformation calculus for invariant manifold and show that a generalized Melnikov function or Melnikov displacement can be written in a canonical way.
Abstract: We study perturbations of diffeomorphisms that have a saddle connection between a pair of normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds. We develop a first-order deformation calculus for invariant manifolds and show that a generalized Melnikov function or Melnikov displacement can be written in a canonical way. This function is defined to be a section of the normal bundle of the saddle connection.
We show how our definition reproduces the classical methods of Poincar\'{e} and Melnikov and specializes to methods previously used for exact symplectic and volume-preserving maps. We use the method to detect the transverse intersection of stable and unstable manifolds and relate this intersection to the set of zeros of the Melnikov displacement.

20 Sep 2004TL;DR: The eigenface method is presented, an attractive methodology for the compression of facial gestures that can be used to drive interaction in real time applications and is used for an avatar videoconference application with very limited bandwidth requirements.
Abstract: We present an attractive methodology for the compression of facial gestures that can be used to drive interaction in real time applications. Using the eigenface method we build compact representation spaces for a variety of facial gestures. These compact spaces are the so called eigenspaces. We do real time tracking and segmentation of facial features from video images and then use the eigenspaces to find compact descriptors of the segmented features. We use the system for an avatar videoconference application where we achieve real time interactivity with very limited bandwidth requirements. The system can also be used as a hands free man-machine interface.

01 Nov 2012TL;DR: The development and actual site testing of an inspection robot designed for boiler header inspections in thermal power plants in Malaysia owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad is discussed.
Abstract: This paper discusses the development and actual site testing of an inspection robot designed for boiler header inspections in thermal power plants in Malaysia owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB). The purpose of boiler headers are to tie up multiple boiler tubes together. Boiler headers are enclosed cylindrical pipes made of carbon steel, horizontal in nature, can range up to 25 m (from TNB database). These boiler headers are highly pressurized and high in temperature during operation, where the pressure goes up to a few bars and the temperature ranges between 500°C until 800°C. Due to the severe working conditions, these boiler headers are exposed to threats of possible failure due to corrosion, pitting and cracks. During outage, after acquiring approval from Department of Safety and Health (DOSH), a small cut is made on the entry point and a boiler header inspection robot (BHIR) is then deployed into the boiler header, carrying a fiber optic camera. BHIR is developed to visually inspect the inner wall of boiler headers and check for signs of failures. This paper discusses the limitations and requirements of the robot, the prototype and also the procedures for actual site testing. Lastly, the site testing results is explained.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the behavior of supercritical super-Brownian motion with a barrier through the pathwise backbone embedding of Berestycki, Kyprianou and Murillo-Salas.
Abstract: We analyse the behaviour of supercritical super-Brownian motion with a barrier through the pathwise backbone embedding of Berestycki, Kyprianou and Murillo-Salas (2011). In particular, by considering existing results for branching Brownian motion due to Harris and Kyprianou (2006) and Maillard (2011), we obtain, with relative ease, conclusions regarding the growth in the right-most point in the support, analytical properties of the associated one-sided Fisher-Kolmogorov-Petrovskii-Piscounov wave equation, as well as the distribution of mass on the exit measure associated with the barrier.
