TL;DR: Microscopically, the venous wall after RFA showed circular disintegration of the intimal layer and cylindrical medial lesions with disintegration and intercellular splits and gaps were observed.
Abstract: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a relatively new method for endoluminal thermal occlusion of the incompetent saphenous veins. The aim of the present study was to investigate microscopically the changes in the venous wall after routine RFA procedures. Short pieces (n=7) from the knee segment of the great saphenous vein were taken during RFA procedures. The removed vein segments were immersion fixed in 10% formalin and proceed to routine histology examination. Microscopically, the venous wall after RFA showed circular disintegration of the intimal layer. In addition, cylindrical medial lesions with disintegration and intercellular splits and gaps were observed. No transmural thermal lesions were seen. The present results highlight the mechanism of predetermined tissue damage after RFA procedures of the great saphenous vein.

TL;DR: The proposed method for the management of perforated sinus membranes can be applied in surgical procedures for perforations > 5 mm in size.
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Bony projections on the inner surface of the maxillary sinus are divided into two main groups: exostoses, which are rounded bone structures, and septa, defined as having a pointed end. Bony septa are common anatomical structures and can lead to complications during sinus augmentation procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study reports a clinical case of a vertical partial basal bony septum, where upon elevation of the sinus membrane, its perforation was observed (size >5 mm). RESULTS: The present study proposes a method of treatment of perforated sinus membranes. The post-surgical period was uneventful. The bone grafting material remained compact in the sinus augmentation site. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed method for the management of perforated sinus membranes can be applied in surgical procedures for perforations > 5 mm in size.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors conducted a study to determine and analyze the level of awareness of healthy living among students from grades eight to eleven, and found that a big part of them rely on information from friends or the internet, as around half of the students count on their schools for information about health related questions.
Abstract: Having basic knowledge, habits and skills about health is essential for living a healthy life. Basic components, connected with the health of students, are a healthy diet, physical activities, social and psychic health. The goal of this research is to determine and analyze the level of awareness of healthy living among students from grades eight to eleven. A total of one hundred and sixty (160) students from four schools, all located in the Varna, have taken part in the research. The research was conducted from February till March 2015. We handed out individual polls, the results of which were processed with mathematical statistic and graphical analyses. Independently from the discretion, that they are informed (90%), the results show that there are things the students do not know. A big part of them rely on information from friends or the internet, as around half of the students (55%) say that they count on their schools for information about health related questions. The information is mostly given by their form-teacher (68%) and the schools psychologist (56%). Medical specialists and lectors are rarely engaged (26%). A big part of the students say that they find the traditional ways of giving out information very helpful.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method to improve the quality of the data collected by the system by using the information from the users' own data points of interest (e.g., a user's profile).

TL;DR: Comparison of recorded interictal electroencephalographic (EEG) data in patients with epilepsy with and without comorbid DD found an increase in slow wave EEG activity in the frontal and temporal lobe as well as a decrease in sensory motor rhythm was found out in the group of Patients with epilepsy and comorbrid DD.
Abstract: PURPOSE: Depressive disorders are the most common interictal psychiatric comorbidity in epilepsy. Recent data highlights the possibility of a close bi-directional pathophysiological relationship between these two disorders. Early detection and treatment of interictal depressive disorder (DD) may significantly improve patients' quality of life. The aim of the present study was to compare recorded interictal electroencephalographic (EEG) data in patients with epilepsy with and without comorbid DD. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty patients with epilepsy were divided into two groups according to the presence/absence of comorbid DD. They were diagnosed by applying the International Classification of Diseases, Version 10 (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria. Evaluation on Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D-17) supported the diagnosis. Nineteen-electrode electroencephalography (EEG) with spectral analysis of the power was recorded for each participant. Gender- and age-matched subjects comprised a control group. RESULTS: An increase in slow wave EEG activity in the frontal and temporal lobe as well as a decrease in sensory motor rhythm was found out in the group of patients with epilepsy and comorbid DD. No such findings were detected in the group of patients with epilepsy only. CONCLUSION: Atypical presentation of interictal DD is common in epilepsy. Comorbid depression remains unrecognized and untreated in a great proportion of patients. Detection of certain patterns of EEG changes may be useful as a screening tool for forwarding these patients to a further psychiatric evaluation. It can serve as a basis for applying alternative therapeutic methods such as the biofeedback method. Scripta Scientifica Medica 2013; 45(1): 48-51.
