Abstract: In this experimental study, an attempt has been made to store excess heat energy in solar stills during the daytime for the continuation of the process at late evening and night hours. To investigate the effect of energy storage materials on the productivity under the same climatic conditions, two identical solar still units are fabricated with an effective area of 0.5 m2. The performance of the still is examined with various energy storage materials, like black granite gravels, pebbles, blue metal stone, and paraffin wax. It is concluded that (i) the energy storage materials in the still store a considerable amount of heat during noon hours and release the stored heat to the basin water in the late evening and night hours, and (ii) black granite gravels are more efficient than pebbles and blue metal stone when used as energy storage materials.

TL;DR: In this article, the average particle size of Ni-doped CdS nanoparticles was found to lie in the range of 2.7-4nm and the band gap was observed to be 3.79-3.95-eV.
Abstract: Ni-doped CdS quantum dots have been prepared by chemical precipitation technique. The X-diffraction results indicated that the particle size of Ni-doped CdS nanoparticles is smaller than that of undoped CdS and no secondary phase was observed. The average grain size of the nanoparticles is found to lie in the range of 2.7–4 nm. The compositional analysis results show that Cd, Ni, and S are present in the samples. HRTEM studies reveal that the average particle size of undoped and Ni-doped CdS quantum dots is 2 and 3 nm, respectively. Raman spectra shows that 1LO, 2LO, and 3LO peaks of the Ni-doped CdS samples are slightly red shifted when compared to that of undoped CdS. The absorption edge of Ni-doped CdS nanoparticles is found to shift towards the higher-wavelength (red shift) side when compared to that of undoped CdS and the band gap is observed to lie in the range of 3.79–3.95 eV. This band gap is higher than that of the bulk CdS and is due to quantum confinement effect present in CdS nanoparticles.

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of an extensive study on the microstructure, microhardness, corrosion, and tensile properties of continuously borided and interrupted boriding specimens of medium-carbon steel are compared.
Abstract: The results of an extensive study on the microstructure, microhardness, corrosion, and tensile properties of continuously borided and interrupted borided specimens of medium-carbon steel are compared. Carbon repartitioning away from the surface is one of the principal modes to accommodate the high strains introduced on boron diffusion into the case. However, this is a kinetically constrained process and is more predominant on interrupted boriding. The effect of such a carbon redistribution is to result in microstructural modifications including (1) blunting of boride needle tips, (2) precipitation of nearly spherical and fine borocarbides, and (3) enhanced carbon segregation at the boride needle/steel matrix interface on interrupted boriding. The mechanisms aiding the change in the morphology of the boride needles are discussed. The improvements in the mechanical and corrosion properties of the interrupted borided specimens over continuously borided specimens are described.

Abstract: Describes the current industrial scenario which is marked by the proliferation of theoretical ideas and concepts on total quality management (TQM) proclaimed by numerous quality management and engineering experts Insists on the need to streamline these ideas and concepts so that TQM programmes in manufacturing firms are focused effectively towards quality enhancement strategies Calls for replacing the traditional terminology, TQM, with that of strategic quality management (SQM) with an updated definition Presents the main results of investigations made during a long research carried out in this direction which began with the identification of a TQM framework of reference on the basis of the old single manufacturer model and culminated in the evolution of a focused SQM system model Concludes by briefing the major findings of the research and mentions the possibility of exploiting artificial intelligence techniques like expert systems for carrying out SQM practices more effectively
