TL;DR: In this paper, a new search strategy within the scope of factorized geometrical autofocus (FGA) and synthetic-aperture-radar processing is described.
Abstract: This paper describes a new search strategy within the scope of factorized geometrical autofocus (FGA) and synthetic-aperture-radar processing. The FGA algorithm is a fast factorized back-projection formulation with six adjustable geometry parameters. By tuning the flight track step by step and maximizing focus quality by means of an object function, a sharp image is formed. We propose an efficient two-stage approach for the geometrical variation. The first stage is a low-order (few parameters) parallel search procedure involving small image areas. The second stage then combines the local hypotheses into one global autofocus solution, without the use of images. This method has been applied successfully on ultrawideband CARABAS II data. Errors due to a constant acceleration are superposed on the measured track prior to processing, giving a 6-D autofocus problem. Image results, including resolution, peak-to-sidelobe ratio and magnitude values for point-like targets, finally confirm the validity of the strategy. The results also verify the prediction that there are several satisfying autofocus solutions for the same radar data.

TL;DR: In the cyber security landscape, the human ability to comprehend and adapt to existing and emerging threats is crucial and not only technical solutions, but also the operator’s ability to grasp the co-ordinated environment is crucial.
Abstract: In the cyber security landscape, the human ability to comprehend and adapt to existing and emerging threats is crucial. Not only technical solutions, but also the operator’s ability to grasp the complexities of the threats affect the level of success or failure that is achieved in cyber defence. In this paper we discuss the general concept of situation awareness and associated measurement techniques. Further, we describe the cyber domain and how it differs from other domains, and show how predictive knowledge can help improve cyber defence. We discuss how selected existing models and measurement techniques for situation awareness can be adapted and applied in the cyber domain to measure actual levels of cyber situation awareness. We identify generic relevant criteria and other factors to consider, and propose a methodology to set up cyber situation awareness measurement experiments within the context of simulated cyber defence exercises. Such experiments can be used to test the viability of different cyber solutions. A number of concrete possible experiments are also suggested.

TL;DR: Transcriptional analysis of Francisella tularensis subsp.
Abstract: Iron is an important nutritional requirement for bacteria due to its conserved role in many essential metabolic processes. As a consequence of the lack of freely available iron in the mammalian host, bacteria upregulate a range of virulence factors during infection. Transcriptional analysis of Francisella tularensis subsp. novicida U112 grown in iron-deficient medium identified 21 genes upregulated in response to this condition, four of which were attributed to a siderophore operon. In addition, a novel iron-regulated gene, FTT0025, was identified which is part of this operon and encodes a 55 kDa hypothetical membrane protein. When grown on chrome azurol S agar, the F. tularensis subsp. novicida U112ΔFTT0025 mutant produced an increased reaction zone compared with the wild-type, suggesting that siderophore production was unaffected but that the bacteria may have a deficiency in their ability to re-sequester this iron-binding molecule. Furthermore, the ΔFTT0025 mutant was attenuated in a BALB/c mouse model of infection relative to wild-type F. tularensis subsp. novicida U112.

TL;DR: Atropine alone was more effective against IL-1beta up-regulation after soman-intoxication within the 2-h time frame, than the combination of the HI 6 and atropine, the therapy of choice in many countries.
Abstract: The current treatment for soman-intoxication is the oxime HI 6 together with the anticholinergic drug atropine. This antidote combination is known to have effects on seizures, respiratory system, blood pressure and animal survival in experiments. However, the inflammatory responses following soman-intoxication leading to neuronal damage have not been fully evaluated. In this paper we focus on the cytokine IL-1beta induction in the rat brain after soman-intoxication (1.0 x LD50 and 1.1 x LD50) and during antidote treatment. We analyzed the IL-1beta levels in rat brain to determine the effects of time of antidote HI 6 and atropine; the effects of different combinations of HI 6 and atropine; and also the effects of antidotes diazepam and atropine following soman-intoxication. We observed that the initiation of the antidote combination of HI 6 and atropine following soman-intoxication was crucial for successful treatment. The study also demonstrated that atropine alone was more effective against IL-1beta up-regulation after soman-intoxication within the 2-h time frame, than the combination of the HI 6 and atropine, the therapy of choice in many countries. Furthermore, treatment with a combination of diazepam and atropine maintained IL-1beta levels at normal when administered at the onset of the seizures following soman exposure. Soman-intoxicated groups without seizures did not have an elevated cytokine level. This corroborates our earlier studies where soman-intoxicated animals with seizures had high levels of IL-1beta, while animals without seizures had normal values. Our results show that both time and the antidote regime are crucial to the success of treatment.
