Abstract
Arsenic toxicity is a global health problem affecting many millions of people. Contamination is caused by arsenic from natural geological sources leaching into aquifers, contaminating drinking water and may also occur from mining and other industrial processes. Arsenic is present as a contaminant in many traditional remedies. Arsenic trioxide is now used to treat acute promyelocytic leukaemia. Absorption occurs predominantly from ingestion from the small intestine, though minimal absorption occurs from skin contact and inhalation. Arsenic exerts its toxicity by inactivating up to 200 enzymes, especially those involved in cellular energy pathways and DNA synthesis and repair. Acute arsenic poisoning is associated initially with nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and severe diarrhoea. Encephalopathy and peripheral neuropathy are reported. Chronic arsenic toxicity results in multisystem disease. Arsenic is a well documented human carcinogen affecting numerous organs. There are no evidence based treatment regimens to treat chronic arsenic poisoning but antioxidants have been advocated, though benefit is not proven. The focus of management is to reduce arsenic ingestion from drinking water and there is increasing emphasis on using alternative supplies of water.

Human health effects of air pollution

TL;DR: Air pollution has both acute and chronic effects on human health, affecting a number of different systems and organs, and ranges from minor upper respiratory irritation to chronic respiratory and heart disease, lung cancer, acute respiratory infections in children and chronic bronchitis in adults.

A review of soil heavy metal pollution from industrial and agricultural regions in China: Pollution and risk assessment.

TL;DR: This paper provides a comprehensive ecological and health risk assessment on the heavy metals in soils in Chinese industrial and agricultural regions and thus provides insights for the policymakers regarding exposure reduction and management.

Mortality experience in relation to a measured arsenic trioxide exposure.

TL;DR: Evidence was obtained which suggests that after removal from arsenic exposure, the risk of lung cancer declines, and certain of the data which are presented suggests there may be a threshold value for airborne arsenic trioxide exposure below which no adverse effects may be expected.

Treatment of acute promyelocytic leukaemia.

TL;DR: Clinical results show that the combination of ATRA and anthracycline-Ara-C chemotherapy can slightly increase the CR rate in newly diagnosed APL, from about 80% (with chemotherapy alone) to more than 90%, and patients presenting with high leukocyte counts seem to benefit particularly from this combined therapy.

Angiosarcoma of the liver associated with Fowler's solution (potassium arsenite).

TL;DR: A patient with an angiosarcoma of the liver associated with the chronic ingestion of Fowler's solution (potassium arsenite) is described, and selective angiography demonstrated features consistent with both hepatoma and cavernous hemangioma.

Outbreak of fatal arsenic poisoning caused by contaminated drinking water.

TL;DR: An outbreak of subacute poisoning occurred among nine members of a family; eight were ill with gastrointestinal symptoms, four developed encephalopathy, and two died; this is only the second reported outbreak of fatal arsenic poisoning from contaminated drinking water and one of few instances where illness followed exposure to a toxic substance which was disposed of, or possibly disposed, in an indiscriminate manner.

Association Between the Clastogenic Effect in Peripheral Lymphocytes and Human Exposure to Arsenic Through Drinking Water

TL;DR: There was a positive but not statistically significant association between CAs and arsenic in hair among the current users, but not among the ex‐users, who still had relatively high arsenic concentrations in hair.
