Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the Losartan Intervention For Endpoint reduction in hypertension study (LIFE): a randomised trial against atenolol.

TLDR
Losartan prevents more cardiovascular morbidity and death than atenolol for a similar reduction in blood pressure and is better tolerated, while new-onset diabetes was less frequent with losartan.

TL;DR: In this article, a randomized controlled trial of Aliskiren in the Prevention of Major Cardiovascular Events in Elderly people was presented. But the authors did not discuss the effect of the combination therapy in patients living with systolic hypertension.

Inflammation in atherosclerosis

TL;DR: The new appreciation of the role of inflammation in atherosclerosis provides a mechanistic framework for understanding the clinical benefits of lipid-lowering therapies and unravelling the details of inflammatory pathways may eventually furnish new therapeutic targets.

Echocardiographic left ventricular geometry in hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy: The LIFE Study.

TL;DR: To assess the prevalence of echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and concentric remodeling in hypertensive patients with electrocardiographic (ECG)-LVH and to estimate the costeffectiveness of eChocardiography and ECG for detection of LVH.

Improved electrocardiographic detection of echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy: results of a correlated data base approach

TL;DR: Incorporation of obesity and age in ECG algorithms consistently improves their performance in the detection of hypertrophy and such ECG approaches should be used in clinical trials to assess the efficacy of antihypertensive treatment to effect regression of left ventricularhypertrophy.

Efficacy and tolerability of losartan potassium and atenolol in patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension

TL;DR: In conclusion, losartan was as efficacious as atenolol in blood pressure reduction, and was at least as well tolerated.

Angiotensin II receptor antagonists: an emerging new class of cardiovascular therapeutics.

TL;DR: The predominant role of the AT1 receptor in mediating the pathophysiological role of Ang II underlies the effectiveness of this novel class of agents to lower arterial blood pressure, reduce pre- and afterload, inhibit sympathetic nervous system activity and prevent cardiovascular hypertrophy and cardiac failure induced by inappropriate control of the RAAS.
