Abstract
Direct imaging of exoplanetary systems is a powerful technique that can reveal Jupiter-like planets in wide orbits, can enable detailed characterization of planetary atmospheres, and is a key step toward imaging Earth-like planets. Imaging detections are challenging because of the combined effect of small angular separation and large luminosity contrast between a planet and its host star. High-contrast observations with the Keck and Gemini telescopes have revealed three planets orbiting the star HR 8799, with projected separations of 24, 38, and 68 astronomical units. Multi-epoch data show counter clockwise orbital motion for all three imaged planets. The low luminosity of the companions and the estimated age of the system imply planetary masses between 5 and 13 times that of Jupiter. This system resembles a scaled-up version of the outer portion of our solar system.

Five steps in the evolution from protoplanetary to debris disk

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used the properties of the youngest (10-20mm) A-star debris disks to consider the transition from protoplanetary to debris disk, and the physical distinction between these two classes should rest on the presence of primordial gas in sufficient quantities to dominate the motion of small dust grains (rather than on the secondary nature of the dust or its level of stirring).

High-resolution imaging of young M-type stars of the solar neighbourhood: probing for companions down to the mass of Jupiter

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the adaptive optic system of VLT-NACO in the L ′ band, using direct imaging and angular differential imaging, to search for gas giant planets orbiting late-type stars and brown dwarfs.

Condition for capture into first-order mean motion resonances and application to constraints on the origin of resonant systems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived the critical migration timescale for capture into the 2:1 resonance with a wide range of various parameters, including the planet-to-stellar mass ratio, and its dependence exhibits power-law behavior.

Validation of the new Hipparcos reduction

TL;DR: In this article, a new reduction of the Hipparcos data was published, which claimed accuracies for nearly all stars brighter than magnitude Hp = 8 to be better, by up to a factor 4, than in the original catalog.

Evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. The case of HD 209458

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present evolutionary models for cool brown dwarfs and extra-solar giant planets and show that irradiation effects can substantially affect the radius of sub-jovian mass giant planets.
