Genomic analysis of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from poultry and occupational farm workers in Umgungundlovu District, South Africa.

TLDR
The need to establish appropriate control measures to curb the spread of MDR-MRSA in the food chain is suggested and a human-associated clone, ST612-CC8-t1257-SCCmec_IVd (2B), previously reported in South Africa is suggested.

SPAdes, a new genome assembly algorithm and its applications to single-cell sequencing ( 7th Annual SFAF Meeting, 2012)

Glenn Tesler
TL;DR: SPAdes as mentioned in this paper is a new assembler for both single-cell and standard (multicell) assembly, and demonstrate that it improves on the recently released E+V-SC assembler and on popular assemblers Velvet and SoapDeNovo (for multicell data).

Molecular epidemiology and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Streptococcus spp. in Africa: a systematic review from a One Health perspective

TL;DR: Strict infection control measures, antimicrobial stewardship, and periodic One Health epidemiological surveillance studies are needed to monitor and contain the threat of increasing antibiotic resistance in Africa.

Antibiotic Resistance and Virulence Gene Characteristics of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Isolated from Healthy Edible Marine Fish.

TL;DR: The findings of this study showed that marine fish contained MDR-MRSA strains that harbour SCCmec types, characteristic of either HA- MRSA or CA-MRsa, but with a low prevalence of enterotoxin and pvl genes, indicating a need for continuous monitoring and implementation of better control strategies within the food chain.

Characterisation of Campylobacter spp. Isolated from Poultry in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

TL;DR: The numerous permutations of clonality, antibiotic resistance, and virulence profiles evident in Campylobacter spp.

MUSCLE: multiple sequence alignment with high accuracy and high throughput

TL;DR: MUSCLE is a new computer program for creating multiple alignments of protein sequences that includes fast distance estimation using kmer counting, progressive alignment using a new profile function the authors call the log-expectation score, and refinement using tree-dependent restricted partitioning.

MEGA7: Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis version 7.0 for bigger datasets

TL;DR: The latest version of the Molecular Evolutionary Genetics Analysis (Mega) software, which contains many sophisticated methods and tools for phylogenomics and phylomedicine, has been optimized for use on 64-bit computing systems for analyzing larger datasets.
