Abstract
This article is a survey of existing hypertext systems, their applications, and their design. It is both an introduction to the world of hypertext and, at a deeper cut, a survey of some of the most important design issues that go into fashioning a hypertext environment. The concept of hypertext is quite simple: Windows on the screen are associated with objects in a database, and links are provided between these objects, both graphically (as labelled tokens) and in the database (as pointers). But this simple idea is creating much excitement. Several universities have created laboratories for research on hypertext, many articles have been written about the concept just within the last year, and the Smithsonian Institute has created a demonstration laboratory to develop and display hypertext technologies.

MORE: Multimedia Object Retrieval Environment

TL;DR: A graph-based object model is presented that will be used as a uniform framework for direct manipulation of multimedia information, and a graph representation of the conceptual schema, the object instances, and the user queries is proposed.

Hypertext for the aged: effects of text topologies

TL;DR: For older adults, hypertext with a hierarchical topology was superior to its referential counterpart in terms of browsing and navigation efficiency, and the implications for design of hypertext systems/interface fit for the aged are discussed.

Evaluation of multimedia applications using inspection methods: The Cognitive Walkthrough case

TL;DR: A study on the use of Cognitive Walkthrough for the evaluation of several multimedia applications intended for the general public is presented; it reveals the difficulties met by users and the areas in which the method needs to be adapted.

The specific involvement of verbal and visuospatial working memory in hypermedia learning

TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis that both verbal and visuospatial working memory sub-components play a role in hypermedium processing, but with specific and distinct functions: the performance in the verbal working memory task was able to predict the semantic knowledge children can derive from hypermedia learning.

On the creation of hypertext links in full‐text documents: measurement of inter‐linker consistency

TL;DR: The results of a study in which several different sets of links are inserted, by different people, between the paragraphs of each of a number of full‐text documents show little similarity, comparable with those of studies of inter‐indexer consistency.
