A survey of existing hypertext systems, their applications, and their design is both an introduction to the world of hypertext and a survey of some of the most important design issues that go into fashioning a hypertext environment.Abstract:
This article is a survey of existing hypertext systems, their applications, and their design. It is both an introduction to the world of hypertext and, at a deeper cut, a survey of some of the most important design issues that go into fashioning a hypertext environment. The concept of hypertext is quite simple: Windows on the screen are associated with objects in a database, and links are provided between these objects, both graphically (as labelled tokens) and in the database (as pointers). But this simple idea is creating much excitement. Several universities have created laboratories for research on hypertext, many articles have been written about the concept just within the last year, and the Smithsonian Institute has created a demonstration laboratory to develop and display hypertext technologies.read more

The effects of menu design on information-seeking performance and user's attitude on the world wide web

TL;DR: The results showed different effect of menu design on both searching performance and browsing performance, and participants' searching performance was superior in the pull-down menu condition compared to the global and local navigation menu and the simple selection menu conditions.

Searching for the missing link: discovering implicit structure in spatial hypertext
TL;DR: This paper examines implicit structures that rely on the interpretation of node’s spatial context and indicates that recognition of implicit structures in spatial hypertext is feasible, interaction will be important in guiding such recognition, and the hypertext system can provide layout facilities that will render later systematic interpretation much easier.

Web navigation and the behavioral effects of constantly visible site maps
TL;DR: Examining user movement through hierarchically structured Web sites and the behavioral effects of a constantly visible, textual contents list for relatively small sites or more extensive local views than are generally used on the Web today finds the site overview resulted in users abandoning fewer information-seeking tasks.

Cognitive load in hypermedia reading comprehension: Influence of text type and linearity
Joerg Zumbach,Maryam Mohraz +1 more
TL;DR: A model stating that extraneous cognitive load in hypermedia learning is basically determined by the interaction of text presentation format (linear/non-linear) with text type (text with and without narrative structures) confirms the suggested interaction hypothesis and suggests a cross-validation of cognitive load measures and propositional analysis.
