The cloning and functional analysis of THOUSAND-GRAIN WEIGHT 6 (TGW6), a gene from the Indian landrace rice Kasalath, suggest that TGW6 may be useful for further improvements in yield characteristics in most cultivars.
Abstract
Increases in the yield of rice, a staple crop for more than half of the global population, are imperative to support rapid population growth. Grain weight is a major determining factor of yield. Here, we report the cloning and functional analysis of THOUSAND-GRAIN WEIGHT 6 (TGW6), a gene from the Indian landrace rice Kasalath. TGW6 encodes a novel protein with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA)-glucose hydrolase activity. In sink organs, the Nipponbare tgw6 allele affects the timing of the transition from the syncytial to the cellular phase by controlling IAA supply and limiting cell number and grain length. Most notably, loss of function of the Kasalath allele enhances grain weight through pleiotropic effects on source organs and leads to significant yield increases. Our findings suggest that TGW6 may be useful for further improvements in yield characteristics in most cultivars.

CLUSTERED PRIMARY BRANCH 1, a new allele of DWARF11, controls panicle architecture and seed size in rice.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the specific mutation in CPB1/D11 influenced development of panicle architecture and seed size, and manipulation of CPB2/D10 expression using the panicle-specific promoter could be used to increase seed sizes, leading to grain yield improvement in rice.

Alternative splicing of OsLG3b controls grain length and yield in japonica rice.

TL;DR: The molecular cloning and characterization of OsLG3b, a QTL for grain length in tropical japonica rice that encodes MADS‐box transcription factor 1 (OsMADS1), and its findings will aid efforts to elucidate the molecular basis of grain development and domestication, but also facilitate the genetic improvement of rice yield.

Auxin Metabolism in Plants.

TL;DR: The major natural auxin in plants, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), orchestrates a plethora of developmental responses that largely depend on the formation of auxin concentration gradients within plant tissues as mentioned in this paper.

Homologous haplotypes, expression, genetic effects and geographic distribution of the wheat yield gene TaGW2

TL;DR: Genetic effects, expression patterns and historic changes of haplotypes at three homoeologous genes of TaGW2 influencing yield were dissected in wheat cultivars and revealed thatTaGW2-6A underwent the highest expression and diversity of the three genes was negatively correlated with their effect on TKW.
