TLDR
In this paper, the authors present a study material for the participants of the course named Multivariate Analysis of Ecological Data that we teach at our university for the third year, which provides an easy-to-read supplement for the more exact and detailed publications like the collection of the Dr. Ter Braak' papers and the Canoco for Windows 4.0 manual.Abstract:
2 Foreword This textbook provides study materials for the participants of the course named Multivariate Analysis of Ecological Data that we teach at our university for the third year. Material provided here should serve both for the introductory and the advanced versions of the course. We admit that some parts of the text would profit from further polishing, they are quite rough but we hope in further improvement of this text. We hope that this book provides an easy-to-read supplement for the more exact and detailed publications like the collection of the Dr. Ter Braak' papers and the Canoco for Windows 4.0 manual. In addition to the scope of these publications, this textbook adds information on the classification methods of the multivariate data analysis and introduces some of the modern regression methods most useful in the ecological research. Wherever we refer to some commercial software products, these are covered by trademarks or registered marks of their respective producers. This publication is far from being final and this is seen on its quality: some issues appear repeatedly through the book, but we hope this provides, at least, an opportunity to the reader to see the same topic expressed in different words.read more

Airway microbiota and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in patients with suboptimally controlled asthma.
Yvonne J. Huang,Craig E. Nelson,Eoin L. Brodie,Todd Z. DeSantis,Marshall S. Baek,Jane Liu,Tanja Woyke,Martin Allgaier,James Bristow,Jeanine P. Wiener-Kronish,E. Rand Sutherland,Tonya S. King,Nikolina Icitovic,Richard J. Martin,William J. Calhoun,Mario Castro,Loren C. Denlinger,Emily DiMango,Monica Kraft,Stephen P. Peters,Stephen I. Wasserman,Michael E. Wechsler,Homer A. Boushey,Susan V. Lynch +23 more
TL;DR: The composition of Bronchial airway microbiota is associated with the degree of bronchial hyperresponsiveness among patients with suboptimally controlled asthma, and these findings support the need for further functional studies to examine the potential contribution of members of theAirway microbiota in asthma pathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recent warming leads to a rapid borealization of fish communities in the Arctic
Maria Fossheim,Raul Primicerio,Edda Johannesen,Randi Ingvaldsen,Michaela Aschan,Andrey V. Dolgov +5 more
TL;DR: This article found that the recent warming in the Barents Sea has led to a change in spatial distribution of fish communities, with boreal communities expanding northwards at a pace reflecting the local climate velocities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Composition of root-colonizing arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal communities in different ecosystems around the globe
TL;DR: The current global analysis of AM fungal communities suggests that soil micro-organisms may exhibit different distribution patterns, resulting in a high variability of taxon richness and composition between particular ecosystems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Statistical determination of diagnostic species for site groups of unequal size
Lubomír Tichý,Milan Chytrý +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a new method of measuring fidelity with presence/absence data after equalization of the size of the site groups, where the number of site groups in the data set is equalized, while relative frequencies of species occurrence within and outside of these groups are kept constant.
Journal ArticleDOI
Naphthenic acids and other acid-extractables in water samples from Alberta: what is being measured?
TL;DR: It appears that the term "naphthenic acids", which has been used to describe the toxic extractable compounds in OSPW, should be replaced by a term such as "oil sands tailings water acid-extractable organics (OSTWAEO)".

Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists
Gerry P. Quinn,Michael J. Keough +1 more
TL;DR: An essential textbook for any student or researcher in biology needing to design experiments, sample programs or analyse the resulting data is as discussed by the authors, covering both classical and Bayesian philosophies, before advancing to the analysis of linear and generalized linear models Topics covered include linear and logistic regression, simple and complex ANOVA models (for factorial, nested, block, split-plot and repeated measures and covariance designs), and log-linear models Multivariate techniques, including classification and ordination, are then introduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Diversity in tropical rain forests and coral reefs.
TL;DR: The commonly observed high diversity of trees in tropical rain forests and corals on tropical reefs is a nonequilibrium state which, if not disturbed further, will progress toward a low-diversity equilibrium community as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Species assemblages and indicator species:the need for a flexible asymmetrical approach
Marc Dufrêne,Pierre Legendre +1 more
TL;DR: A new and simple method to find indicator species and species assemblages characterizing groups of sites, and a new way to present species-site tables, accounting for the hierarchical relationships among species, is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Canonical Correspondence Analysis: A New Eigenvector Technique for Multivariate Direct Gradient Analysis
TL;DR: In this article, a new multivariate analysis technique, called canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), was developed to relate community composition to known variation in the environment, where ordination axes are chosen in the light of known environmental variables by imposing the extra restriction that the axes be linear combinations of environmental variables.
