TLDR
It is found that, as has long been suspected by cortical neuroanatomists, the same basic laminar and tangential organization of the excitatory neurons of the neocortex is evident wherever it has been sought.Abstract:
We explore the extent to which neocortical circuits generalize, i.e., to what extent can neocortical neurons and the circuits they form be considered as canonical? We find that, as has long been suspected by cortical neuroanatomists, the same basic laminar and tangential organization of the excitatory neurons of the neocortex is evident wherever it has been sought. Similarly, the inhibitory neurons show characteristic morphology and patterns of connections throughout the neocortex. We offer a simple model of cortical processing that is consistent with the major features of cortical circuits: The superficial layer neurons within local patches of cortex, and within areas, cooperate to explore all possible interpretations of different cortical input and cooperatively select an interpretation consistent with their various cortical and subcortical inputs.read more

Neonatal whisker clipping alters behavior, neuronal structure and neural activity in adult rats
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the roles of early tactile experience on the establishment of layer-specific excitatory connection in the barrel cortex and a fault in transducing sensory-related neural activity between cortical layers in WC0-3 rats.

Neuroscientific Modeling with a Mixed-Signal VLSI Hardware System
TL;DR: This thesis presents a novel methodological framework that renders possible the beneficial utilization of such devices as neuroscientific modeling tools and introduces a dedicated software framework that implements these methods and integrates the hardware interface into a simulator-independent modeling language, which is supported by various established software simulators.

Competition through selective inhibitory synchrony
TL;DR: In this article, a simple modification to the WTA circuit design that allows the effects of distributed inhibitory neurons to be coupled through synchronization, and so allows a single WTA to be distributed widely in cortical space, well beyond the arborization of any single inhibitory neuron and even across different cortical areas.

TL;DR: It is argued that UHF MRI is uniquely suited to shed light on how sounds are represented throughout the network of auditory brain regions, and the provided gain in spatial resolution at UHF can be used to study the functional role of the small subcortical auditory processing stages and details of cortical processing.

Emergent Inference of Hidden Markov Models in Spiking Neural Networks Through Winner-Take-All
TL;DR: A precise equivalence is built between the inference equation of HMMs with time-invariant hidden variables and the dynamics of spiking winner-take-all (WTA) neural networks and the firing rate of each neuron is proportional to the posterior probability of the HMMs.

Receptive fields, binocular interaction and functional architecture in the cat's visual cortex
David H. Hubel,Torsten N. Wiesel +1 more
TL;DR: This method is used to examine receptive fields of a more complex type and to make additional observations on binocular interaction and this approach is necessary in order to understand the behaviour of individual cells, but it fails to deal with the problem of the relationship of one cell to its neighbours.

Neuromorphic electronic systems
TL;DR: It is shown that for many problems, particularly those in which the input data are ill-conditioned and the computation can be specified in a relative manner, biological solutions are many orders of magnitude more effective than those using digital methods.
