TLDR
It is found that, as has long been suspected by cortical neuroanatomists, the same basic laminar and tangential organization of the excitatory neurons of the neocortex is evident wherever it has been sought.
Abstract
We explore the extent to which neocortical circuits generalize, i.e., to what extent can neocortical neurons and the circuits they form be considered as canonical? We find that, as has long been suspected by cortical neuroanatomists, the same basic laminar and tangential organization of the excitatory neurons of the neocortex is evident wherever it has been sought. Similarly, the inhibitory neurons show characteristic morphology and patterns of connections throughout the neocortex. We offer a simple model of cortical processing that is consistent with the major features of cortical circuits: The superficial layer neurons within local patches of cortex, and within areas, cooperate to explore all possible interpretations of different cortical input and cooperatively select an interpretation consistent with their various cortical and subcortical inputs.

Neuromorphic Electronic Circuits for Building Autonomous Cognitive Systems This paper proposes a set of neuromorphic engineering solutions to address the challenge of building low-power compact physical artifacts that can behave intelligently in the real world and exhibit cognitive abilities.

TL;DR: In this article, a set of neuromorphic engineering solutions for fast simulations of spiking neural networks is proposed, which can emulate neural and synaptic dynamics in real time and discuss the role of biophysically realistic temporal dynamics in hardware neural processing architectures; the challenges of realizing spike-based plasticity mechanisms in real physical systems and present examples of analog electronic circuits that implement them.

Evoked brain responses are generated by feedback loops

TL;DR: It is shown that evoked brain responses are generated by recurrent dynamics in cortical networks, and late components of event-related responses are mediated by backward connections, a generic feature of brain responses to changes in the sensorium and a key architectural component of functional anatomy.

Robust Gamma Coherence between Macaque V1 and V2 by Dynamic Frequency Matching

TL;DR: Gamma coherence among remote populations can occur despite large stimulus-induced and time-dependent changes in gamma frequency, allowing communication through coherence to operate without a stimulus independent, fixed-frequency gamma channel.

A Dual Operator View of Habitual Behavior Reflecting Cortical and Striatal Dynamics

TL;DR: It is suggested that learning-related spiking dynamics of both striatum and neocortex are necessary, as dual operators, for habit crystallization.

Three Types of Cortical Layer 5 Neurons That Differ in Brain-wide Connectivity and Function

TL;DR: Differences in connectivity and function of these cell types in mouse primary visual cortex suggest distinct roles as specialized output channels, with CS neurons integrating information and generating responses more relevant to movement control and CC neurons being more important in visual perception.

Receptive fields, binocular interaction and functional architecture in the cat's visual cortex

TL;DR: This method is used to examine receptive fields of a more complex type and to make additional observations on binocular interaction and this approach is necessary in order to understand the behaviour of individual cells, but it fails to deal with the problem of the relationship of one cell to its neighbours.

Neuromorphic electronic systems

TL;DR: It is shown that for many problems, particularly those in which the input data are ill-conditioned and the computation can be specified in a relative manner, biological solutions are many orders of magnitude more effective than those using digital methods.
