Daily coordination of orexinergic gating in the rat superior colliculus—Implications for intrinsic clock activities in the visual system

TL;DR: In this paper, a combination of electrophysiological, immunohistochemical, and molecular approaches across 24 hours was used to investigate the daily coordination between the orexin system and the superior colliculus (SC).

From Fast Oscillations to Circadian Rhythms: Coupling at Multiscale Frequency Bands in the Rodent Subcortical Visual System

TL;DR: The subcortical visual system (SVS) is a unique collection of brain structures localised in the thalamus, hypothalamus and midbrain this article, which receives ambient light inputs from retinal ganglion cells and integrates this signal with internal homeostatic demands to influence physiology.

Control and coding of pupil size by hypothalamic orexin neurons

TL;DR: In this paper , cell-specific stimulation, deletion and in vivo recordings revealed strong correlative and causal links between pupil dilation and orexin cell activity, indicating that they specialize in rapid, multiplexed communication of momentary arousal and reward states.

Metabolic cues impact non‐oscillatory intergeniculate leaflet and ventral lateral geniculate nucleus: standard versus high‐fat diet comparative study

TL;DR: In this article , the effect of metabolically relevant peptides on the spontaneous activity of IGL/VLG neurons was investigated using ex vivo and in vivo electrophysiological recordings as well as in situ hybridisation.

Circadian regulation of mouse suprachiasmatic nuclei neuronal states shapes responses to orexin.

TL;DR: How the resting state of SCN neurons determines their response to OXA is demonstrated, and the inhibitory action of this neurochemical correlate of arousal can trigger paradoxical AP firing is illustrated.

Multiple excitatory actions of orexins upon thalamo-cortical neurons in dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus - implications for vision modulation by arousal.

TL;DR: It is hypothesised that the depolarising effects of orexins upon DLG neurons may facilitate signal transmission through the visual thalamo-cortical pathway during behavioural arousal, and underlie the circadian/behavioural modulation of vision.

PAC1- and VPAC2 receptors in light regulated behavior and physiology: Studies in single and double mutant mice

TL;DR: The data demonstrate that in although being closely related at both ligand and receptor structure/sequence, PACAP/PAC1 receptor signaling are independent of VIP/VPAC2 receptor signaling and vice versa, and lack of either of the receptors does not result in compensatory changes at neither the physiological or anatomical level.
Journal ArticleDOI

Circadian actions of orexins on the retinorecipient lateral geniculate complex in rat

TL;DR: It is shown that orexins exert an excitatory action in three parts of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), in particular upon directly retinorecipient neurons in the non‐image forming visual structures, helping to better understand circadian orexinergic control over the non-image forming subcortical visual system.

Perforated Multi-Electrode Array Recording in Hypothalamic Brain Slices.

TL;DR: An overview of a step-by-step method to perform multisite extracellular AP activity recordings in suprachiasmatic and mediobasal hypothalamic nuclei brain slices, using a state-of-the-art perforated multielectrode array system.
