The distribution of the phenolic metabolites barbaloin, aloeresin and aloenin as a peripheral defense strategy in the succulent leaf parts of Aloe arborescens.

TL;DR: It is possible that the more often the plant parts are damaged by consumption by animals such as elephants, kudu or insects, the greater the increase of their phenolic metabolites, which may reduce or prevent further consumption when the content of the metabolites reaches a certain level.
Journal ArticleDOI

Curcumin, mitochondrial biogenesis, and mitophagy: Exploring recent data and indicating future needs

TL;DR: The aim of the present work is to critically review the scientific evidence to provide a clear view of how curcumin improves mitochondrial dynamics regarding mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Growth and development of a generalist insect herbivore, Operophtera brumata, on original and alternative host plants

TL;DR: It is suggested that in a heterogeneous environment the disturbing effect of alternative host plants on adult emergence may decrease the population density and growth rate compared to the potential maximum in a homogeneous environment.
Journal ArticleDOI

Expression of terpene synthase genes associated with the formation of volatiles in different organs of Vitis vinifera

TL;DR: Real-time RT-PCR results revealed that the majority of TPS genes analysed exhibited detectable transcripts in all the organs investigated, while only some were found to be expressed specifically in one or just a few organs, which confirmed the subfunctionalization events and a specialization on the basis of the organs in which they are mostly expressed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Synergistic antimycobacterial activities of sesquiterpene lactones from Laurus spp.

TL;DR: Sesquiterpene lactones, costunolide and dehydrocostuslactone, were the compounds responsible for the antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv with MICs of 6.25 and 12.5 mg/L, respectively.
