Abstract
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.

Surface‐induced ordering of a liquid crystal in the isotropic phase. II. 4‐methoxybenzylidene‐4′‐n‐butylaniline (MBBA)

TL;DR: The boundary order parameter of the liquid crystal MBBA in the isotropic phase has been deduced for several surface treatments by measuring the surface induced pretransitional birefringence.

Biaxial nematic phase, multiphase critical point, and reentry transition in binary liquid crystal mixtures

TL;DR: In this paper, a model considering both short-range and long-range interactions for liquid crystals mixtures of rod-like and plate-like molecules is presented, and the model is treated in the framework of a mean field, van der Waals-type theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, the free energy of the q-component Potts model in the presence of arbitrary external fields is generated to eight order for five lattices and subsequently analyzed in three dimensions.

Phase transition and director fluctuations in the three-dimensional Lebwohl-Lasher model of liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this article, Monte Carlo computer simulation techniques are used to study the orientational phase transition in the three-dimensional Lebwohl-Lasher model which couples molecular rotors placed on a cubic lattice by the potential P 2(cos ϑ ij ).
