Abstract
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.

Nanosecond time scale dynamics of pseudo-nematic domains in the isotropic phase of liquid crystals

TL;DR: In this paper, the slow reorientational dynamics of isotropic methoxybenzylidene-butylaniline (MBBA) were measured, using a transient grating optical Kerr effect experiment, over a wide temperature range (49.4°-119.7°C).

Engineering liquid crystals for optimal uses in optical communication systems

TL;DR: In this article, the main driving physical features determining their optical and dynamic behaviour, illustrated through various pure or composite liquid crystal materials, are reviewed and examples illustrating the huge variety of their possible effects, in particular when engineered with polymer chains.

Blue phases of cholesteryl nonanoate

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the transformation on heating of an ordinary (helical) cholesteric liquid crystal (CHOL) into the isotropic phase (ISO) often occurs via a number of intermediate "blue" phases.

Structure of polymeric glasses and melts

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the results is presented with special emphasis on the differentation between short range order, as e.g. revealed from the pair distribution function, and long range correlations as proposed for the so-called bundle models.

Orientation of Thermotropic Liquid-Crystalline Polyesters in High Magnetic Fields

TL;DR: In this article, strongly oriented poly-crystalline samples of polyesters containing mesogenic moieties and flexible spacers in the main chain have been produced by slowly cooling the molten samples in magnetic fields of up to 16 Tesla.
