Pretransitional Phenomena in the Isotropic Phase of a Nematic Liquid Crystal
T. W. Stinson,J. D. Litster +1 more
TLDR
In this article, the authors have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal.Abstract:
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.read more

TL;DR: The evidence for long-range pretransitional effects in the liquid phase of ODIC-forming cycloctanol is presented in this article, which can be considered a potential base for the new generation of supercritical technologies, using ODIC forming liquids with properties controlled by the electric field.

Mesophase study of pure and doped cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals with salen-type systems
TL;DR: Two base ligands derived from the condensation of ethylendiamine on salicylaldehyde and 5-chlorosalicylalaldehyde were derived from N,N′-bis(salicylidene)ethylene-diamine (L1) and N, N′-is(5-chlor... as discussed by the authors.

Mode-selective dynamic light scattering spectroscopy: application to the isotropic phase of liquid crystals.
Shinsaku Takagi,Hajime Tanaka +1 more
TL;DR: A new method of "mode-selective" dynamic light scattering spectroscopy is developed that allows to study dynamic modes usually hidden behind large fluctuations of a critical mode to observe the thermal diffusion and sound modes without the interference of incoherent critical orientational fluctuations.

Second Harmonic Generation in Nematic Liquid Crystals: Effect of Molecular Symmetry, Nonlinear Susceptibility and Phase-Matching
S. M. Arakelyan,Yu. S. Chilingaryan,G. L. Grigoryan,G. A. Lyakhov,S. Ts. Nersisyan,Yu. P. Svirko +5 more
Abstract: Second harmonic generation in the nematic liquid crystal MBBA was experimentally observed both for phase-matched and for non-phase-matched interactions. The nonlinear susceptibility tensor components values were measured for the first time. The possible SHG mechanisms are discussed. The obtained new physical information on liquid crystal structure is emphasized. The experimental results are thoroughly compared with calculations of second harmonic generation parameters. A physical interpretation of observable effects is given.

Dynamic critical behavior above a strong first-order phase transition☆
Vincenzo Rizi,Sourav Ghosh +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the dynamic critical behaviour observed in the isotropic liquid phase of butylcyanobiphenyl, a monotropic liquid crystal, above its solid-isotropic transition which is known to be strong first-order was investigated.
