Abstract
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Cotton-Mouton effect was used for quincke rotation in liquid crystals, and the effect was shown to be effective in the case of bent-core liquid crystals.

Effect of local molecular ordering on the temperature behavior of the relaxation time of order-parameter fluctuations in the isotropic phase of PAA nematic liquid crystal

TL;DR: The behavior of the relaxation time of order-parameter fluctuations in the isotropic phase of PAA nematic liquid crystal was investigated on the basis of the spectra of depolarized (inelastic) light scattering in a wide temperature range including the immediate vicinity to the temperature of the nematic phase transition.

Diamagnetic “Curie-Weiss law” and molecular interactions in organic liquids

TL;DR: In this article, a diamagnetic "Curie-Weiss law" was found in various organic liquids and their mixtures by using the magnetic birefringence effect in pulsed magnetic fields up to 40 T.

Nonresonant third-order susceptibility measurements in the nematic liquid crystal K18

TL;DR: In this article, a large nonresonant third-order nonlinear susceptibility, X(3) (-ω; ω, 0, 0) was observed in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal 4′-n-hexyl-4-cyanobiphenyl (K18).
