Pretransitional Phenomena in the Isotropic Phase of a Nematic Liquid Crystal

TLDR
In this article, the authors have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal.Abstract:
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.read more

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors measured the polarized (I∥) and the depolarized (I⊥) scattered light intensities by fluctuations of the orientational order parameter as a function of two scattering angles over a range of temperatures close to and above the isotropic−nematic phase transition of para−methoxybenzylidine para−n−butylaniline (MBBA).

Dynamical Behavior of a Nematic Liquid Crystal just above the Nematic-Isotropic Transition from Spin-Lattice Relaxation
TL;DR: In this paper, the de Gennes-Purcell-Pound relaxation time of the proton spin-lattice relaxation time was shown to be correlated with the temperature dependence of critical fluctuations.
