Pretransitional Phenomena in the Isotropic Phase of a Nematic Liquid Crystal
T. W. Stinson,J. D. Litster +1 more
TLDR
In this article, the authors have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal.Abstract:
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.read more

Short-Range Order Fluctuation in the Isotropic Phase of Solutions of 4-trans-4'-n-dodecylcyanobiphenyl in Benzene Studied by Nonlinear Dielectric Spectroscopy
TL;DR: In this article, a nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy was used to study the dynamics of the smectogenic compound 4-trans-4′-n-dodecylcyanobiphenyl in the isotropic phase as a function of its concentration in benzene.

Magnetooptic investigation of the rod to coil transition in solutions of polydiacetylene poly(4-BCMU)
TL;DR: Cotton-Mouton measurements on dilute solutions of polydiacetylene poly(4-BCMU) are reported in this article, showing that in equilibrium the red phase contains small aggregates of rods, generally numbering N < 5.

Life-time renormalization in critical dynamics as applied to the isotropic-nematic transition in sidechain liquid crystalline polymers
Kyozi Kawasaki,Helmut R. Brand +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the dynamic behavior near the isotropic-nematic transition in liquid crystalline sidechain polymers using a mode coupling technique as applied to the life-time renormalization.

Critical behavior of 1‐nitropropane‐dodecane solution by the NDE method
TL;DR: For a 1-nitropropane-dodecane solution the coexistence curve was plotted and critical parameters determined in this article, where the critical part of the effect may be described by a power relation where the exponent ψ= 0.405 × 0.01.
