TLDR
In this article, the authors have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal.Abstract:
We have observed a divergence of the magnetic birefringence, and a critical increase and slowing of the fluctuations in order in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal. Our results are quantitatively described by a mean-field model except for a critical region close to the ordering temperature where the fluctuations are so large that the meanfield approximation fails.read more

Effect of concentration on the photo-orientation and relaxation dynamics of self-assembled monolayers of mixtures of an azobenzene-based triethoxysilane with octyltriethoxysilane.
Guanjiu Fang,Nathan Koral,Chenhui Zhu,Youngwoo Yi,Matthew A. Glaser,Joseph E. Maclennan,Noel A. Clark,Eva Korblova,David M. Walba +8 more
TL;DR: Self-assembled monolayers were prepared from solutions with different proportions of a photoactive, azobenzene-based, silanized derivative of disperse red one (dDR1), and octyltriethoxysilane (OTE), a shorter, nonphotoactive molecule, enabling the study of photowriting and relaxation dynamics in monolayer dynamics.

Introduction to the Molecular Theory of Smectic-A Liquid Crystals
TL;DR: In this article, the existence of the nematic phase was treated as an order-disorder phenomenon and an expression for the orientational potential energy of a molecule in a nematic liquid in terms of this order parameter was derived.

Measurements of dc Kerr Constants for a Homologous Series of Nematic Compounds
TL;DR: The dc Kerr constants of seven p,p′-nalkoxyazoxybenzene homologous compounds have been measured as functions of temperature in the isotropic phase.

Swelling behaviour of poly(butadiene) gels in liquid crystal solvents
TL;DR: In this paper, the swelling behavior of poly(butadiene) gels in four different nematogenic liquid crystalline (LC) solvents has been investigated as a function of temperature.

Critical Fluctuations and Molecular Dynamics at Liquid‐Crystalline Phase Transitions. II. Electron Spin Resonance Experiments
TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the properties of the spin resonance relaxation at the N-I and N-SA phase transitions in two liquid crystals, 4O,6 and 6OCB-8OCB, using the three spin probes, PD•tempone, MOTA, and P.
