The revolution of Internet and the Web takes the computer and information technology into a new age. The information on the web is growing very fast. The progress of information and communication technologies has made accessible a large amount of information, which have provided each of us with access to far more information than we can comprehend or manage. This emphasizes the difficulty with the resulting semantic heterogeneity of the diverse sources. Human knowledge is a living organism and as such evolves in time where different people having different viewpoints and using different terminology among people of different cultures and languages, intensify the heterogeneity of the sources even more. These introduce some concrete problems like natural language disambiguation, information retrieval and information integration. Nevertheless, the problem is quite well known in almost every branch of knowledge and has been independently approached by several communities for several decades. To make this huge amount of existing information accessible and manageable while also solving the semantic heterogeneity problem, namely the problem of diversity in knowledge, and therefore support interoperability, it is essential to have a large scale high quality collaborative knowledge base along with a suitable structure as a common ground on which interoperability among people and different systems should be possible. It will play the role of a reference point for communication, assigning clear meaning by accurate disambiguation to exchanged information, communication and automating complex tasks. However, successfully building large scale knowledge bases with maximum coverage is not possible by a single person or a small group of people without collaborative support. It extremely depends on expert community based support. Therefore, it is necessary for experts to work together on knowledge base building. Furthermore, it is very natural that these expert users will be geographically distributed. Web 2.0 has the potential to support information sharing, interoperability and collaboration on the Web. Simplicity, flexibility and easy to use services make it an interactive and collaborative platform which allows them to create or edit their content. The exponential expansion of the Web users and the potentials of Web 2.0 make it the natural platform of choice for developing knowledge bases collaboratively. We propose a highly flexible knowledge base system, which takes into account diversity of knowledge and its evolution in time. The work presented in this thesis is part of a larger project. More specifically the goal of this thesis is to create a powerful and easy to use knowledge base management system to help people in building, organizing a high quality knowledge base and making accessible their knowledge and to support interoperability in real world scenarios.

Purpose/Thesis: The article aims to present and discuss some introductory reflections on the nature of interdisciplinarity of research conducted in the field of information science and its effect on the reorganization of the institutional setting of the discipline.Approach/Methods: This is a conceptual review article based on theoretical considerations and critical analysis of the concept of interdisciplinarity and the features of interdisciplinary approaches employed in information science research and its effect on the position of information science in university structure.Results and Conclusions: The concept of interdisciplinarity is discussed with reference to two aspects of the development of science: specialization and integration. The article presents selected typologies of interdisciplinarity and discusses the changes in the perception of the concept of discipline. Interdisciplinarity has been discussed as an inherent feature of information science. The types of interdisciplinarity that best correspond to the specificity of the interdisciplinary approach used in information science research has been indicated. Referring to previous studies, the article sketches the most characteristic interdisciplinary connections of information science. In general, the review shows that apart from the permanent relationship with social sciences, in particular with library science and computer science, the relationships between information science and other disciplines are variable and quite loose. Stronger relationships are most often generated through practical activity in related disciplines, in which specialized information services are the most developed and widely used.Originality/Value: The view that information science is by its very nature an interdisciplinary field of research is common among information researchers and information professionals. Much research has been done on the interdisciplinary connections of the discipline, however, by the best author’s knowledge, few of them analyzed the specificity of interdisciplinarity of this field of research. This article attempts to initiate an in-depth discussion on this issue.

A Teoria da Classificacao Facetada, de Ranganathan, tem sido utilizada recentemente como base para a organizacao de dominios de conhecimento nas mais diversas areas, uma vez que fornece um conjunto de categorias de alto nivel que possibilitam um principio norteador para o recorte desses dominios. Originalmente, entretanto, seu foco de uso era voltado para a organizacao de documentos nas estantes e para a descricao de assuntos em bibliotecas. Essa mudanca de propositos, bem como a dificuldade de entendimento da obra de Ranganathan, parece trazer um custo associado para as iniciativas de aplicacao de suas teorias, em especial no que tange a identificacao das categorias de Personalidade e Materia. Corroborando essa proposicao, temos que a analise de alguns exemplos de classificacao presentes nas obras de referencia de Ranganathan, quando confrontadas com as definicoes apresentadas para as suas categorias revelam certas divergencias. O objetivo do presente artigo e apresentar uma analise dessas divergencias, ilustrando a importância do contexto e do entendimento dos pressupostos teoricos na utilizacao de categorias para fins de organizacao de conhecimento. Como resultado apresenta-se uma sistematizacao de questoes suscitadas a partir dessa analise, que denominamos de analise ontologica, e mostra-se a importância de seconsiderar o contexto na classificacao facetada, bem como de entender os pressupostos que norteiam a definicao de categorias que apoiam uma estrutura classificatoria.

Dr. S. R. Ranganathan had two sides to his conceptual make up-his intellectual being which was essentially Western oriented and his cultural being which was rooted deap in tradition. His adherence to scientific methodology established his bonafides as his being a part of the mainstream. His intellect cut across national boundaries. He could be classed with Dewey, Cutter and Bliss with ease. His cultural background could be incidental to his contribution to library science.
