Abstract:Concepts are central elements of knowledge. This article reveals some of the historical contours of the use of \"the concept\" in information by delving into the evolution of the use of the term in American Documentation, the first formal journal of information science in North America. Discourse in American Documentation about \"the concept\" was critical to the development of machine searching to have a concrete definition of a concept. Metaphors used to visualize the role of concepts range from multidimensional arrays to lights shining in the darkness of semantic space.Résumé:Les concepts sont des éléments centraux de la connaissance. Cet article présente certains des contours historiques de l'utilisation de « concept » dans le domaine de l'information en se penchant sur l'évolution de l'utilisation du terme dans American Documentation, la première revue officielle des sciences de l'informa-tion en Amérique du Nord. Le discours dans American Documentation sur « the concept » a été essentiel au développement de la recherche par machine pour avoir une définition concrète d'un concept. Les métaphores utilisées pour visualiser le rôle des concepts vont des tableaux multidimensionnels aux lumières qui brillent dans l'obscurité de l'espace sémantique.

Deux grands noms dominent l'histoire des bibliotheques: Melvil Dewey et S.R. Ranganathan. Ce dernier, penseur, planificateur, educateur, administrateur et grand ecrivain a modernise les bibliotheques en Inde et revolutionne la profession dans le monde entier par ses contributions au developpement de la science de l'information. Cet article retrace sa carriere et presente les differentes phases de son action qui en font le pionnier du 20eme siecle en bibliotheconomie. (INTD)

S.R. Ranganathan: the crusader

To achieve semantic interoperability, geo-spatial applications need to be equipped with tools able to understand user terminology that is typically different from the one enforced by standards. In this paper we summarize our experience in providing a semantic extension to the geo-catalogue of the Autonomous Province of Trento (PAT) in Italy. The semantic extension is based on the adoption of the S-Match semantic matching tool and on the use of a specifically designed faceted ontology codifying domain specific knowledge. We also briefly report our experience in the integration of the ontology with the geo-spatial ontology GeoWordNet.
